Confused About Tech Skill Tree
The first branch of the Tech Skill Tree is stuff like "You can now utilize boost packs" or "You can now utilize ship thrusters".

The thing is, I can already use boost packs and ship thrusters without getting these perks. Does "utilize" mean I can use them more effectively? I don't get it.

You should not be able to use the boost of boost packs (jump then space again) nor the thrusters of ships (Left Shift) without the perks.

Well, I can. I can also use the targeting system for missiles without getting the perk either. Is this a bug?

Must be a bug yes, you aren't supposed to be able to use these without having the skill.

That isn't what System targeting is referring to. When you put a point into targeting systems you can press R (on KBM) once you've locked onto a target ship, this will zoom in and bring up the ships sub-systems (just like yours where you put power) and you can cycle through them, like you do when shifting your ships power, to target a specific sub-system such as engines, or gravdrive, or weapon1, etc.

This not only allows you to take out a specific system/ship part but it also does slightly more damage more quickly than just targeting the ships "hull" in general.

Being able to lock missiles is very different from being able target the engines or shields of a ship and not reliant on a skill point to use. That is what targeting skill gives you access too. You can read the descriptions of the skills to see what each level will give you.

Well okay, I can't use the targeting system then. But this doesn't explain how I can still use Left Shift to use the ship thrusters and the boostpack without having any of those skills.

Post a screen shot or video of your perks and how you're boosting with the jetpack? Are you sure you don't already have a point in them from your background?

What background did you choose and which traits did you choose?

If you are actually able to boost with a jetpack you either have the perk or its a bug. There are a plethora of posts with people asking why they aren't able to use a jetpack. Same with the ship boost. Show a screen shot of you boosting in a ship, You either don't have the boost meter on the side and are just thinking you're boosting or its a bug.

It should also be noted that using sub-system targeting to cripple the engines of the last enemy ship you are fighting allows you to board it. Just make sure not to blow it up after its engines are down and keep in mind that even with engines shot off, the enemy ship can still keep shooting at you.

I actually just got the boostpack perk to see if I "boost better" but it made no difference. I still don't have the ship thruster perk though, I'll post a screenshot in an hour.

For traits and background; I chose Ronin as the background and "Adoring Fan" with the "Wanted" trait to spice things up. So nothing to do with the tech skill tree.

OP, the thruster thing unlocked by the skill isn't left shift to go faster - it's using the space bar to strafe in combat. Or so I heard.

The thrusters are not the shift function - the boost.. the thrusters allow you to hold spacebar and turn while drifting - a must in any space dogfight. Though I´m not sure if the backpack boosters work with or without the rank 1 skill.. was the first skill I trained in just to be sure at level 2 (cyber runner start)

Oh, OK then. I wish they were more clear about what the hell the perks actually do and don't. I got confused about boostpacks, targeting system AND the ship thrusters.

Never had this problem with Fallout games.

This I'll concur with, as well as the descriptions of the backgrounds and traits you pick during character creation. The "Dream House" one sounds like it will be a terrible and untenable detriment to your early-game with how it is worded. But it only deducts 500 credits each time you visit the house until you've paid it off; or you can go to a GalBank location and pay it off in-full whenever you can/want. Some of them are simple and straight forward and the description makes sense, but others really don't do a good job at conveying how the perk/trait works.
