we need to talk about the gamebryo problem
so the engine Bethesda uses for rpgs is based on the gamebryo engine, at this point an ancient relic, hell it was old when skyrim came out, now its 26 years old, over 2 and a half decades, and for some reason Bethesda still uses it. some one needs to like sit tod howard down and have a talk or something because its getting absurd, it holds the game back so much its not even funny, its the reason there are no ground vehicles, there reason there is no modern tech like DLSS and it runs like absolute garbage because the engine was not designed to handle this kind of fidelity. if something does change, elder scroll 6 is going to be complete dog water

unreal engine 5 is based on an ancient engine as well.

the engine is an integral part of the feel of an bethesda game and they will keep it just like it should be.

also the engine being the reason why there is no DLSS support is complete bs, otherwise modders would not be able to add it like they did within the first day of the release of the game.

Runs at 145 FPS in 4K. Maybe the problem is user and not engine.

Absolutely Agree with OP, and I have more to complain about this game.

For me this game is a STEP BACKWARDS in gaming evolution, well 5 steps backwards.

1. They took away our freedom to fly our own ship to the surface of a planet.
2. They took away the ability to fly our ships anywhere we want on the surface of a planet.
3. They took away ground vehicles in place for running with the garbage explanation they wanted us to walk the surface and explore that way, WTF. There is nothing to explore because its all the same building design and planet layout over and over and over. Boring as F.
4. A.I companions attached to your hip as they mirror your moves for example, kneeling, pulling out your weapon or storing it and everywhere you go the A.i. companions are in the way up in you ars all the time. Lame and outdated A.I. companion behavior.
5. There just simply is not much to explore, its all the same over and over and over.
6. Storage is garbage, U.I is garbage and Lazy in design.
7. Loading screen after loading after loading, my gosh.

This is my idea of what could have been a great game for Starfield: Why would they not have created a universe with maybe 6 to 8 solar systems that are rich with creativity and fantasy full of art and design ideas for what the future could look like, then add DLC content to the game with more solar systems rich and flourishing with content INSTEAD of the garbage that Starfield truly is which is, unimaginative, un-creative, boring, restrictive step backwards in gaming evolution.
I wanted this game to be something new and refreshing and been really excited for it for half a year, now its just another empty, boring lame maybe 6/10 average game.

Companies like to milk assets out the wazoo to save money. Starfield is like the last few drops from an old teet.

Imagine how long it would take anyone to make games if they had to create a whole new engine every couple years so it wasn't chronologically connected to one from decades ago lol.

Todd tells everyone to upgrade their PC?

I say Todd needs to upgrade his engine. :hintlord:

Use 3rd party game engines instead.

I agree, it is a massive step backwards in gaming evolution and a slap in the face towards gamer's, they think were are to dumb to understand.

Some people get so personally invested in something that they would literally rather go to their grave before trading up for something else even if that something else is way better or more beneficial to everyone. It's semi-rare but I've seen it in a few people now, personally.

Someone at Bethesda (whether it's Todd or whoever) is fairly obviously one such individual.

unreal 5 and the first unreal engine are completely different engines, the "new" creation engine is just gamebryo with a fancy hat

This engine has one important feature. It's stable like crzy. I mean, even thousands of chaotic ojbects appearing and bumping in the air and of the walls didn't drop a single fps.
In other words. The engine is ready for whatever is going to happen and keeps your FPS stable. IDK, But I prefer stable 50-60 over 75-80 with spikes to 20 fps.

maybe just make a new one every 20 years at least lol
Dark Phoenix Sep 9, 2023 @ 9:52am
While a new engine would be nice, the issue is that there would be little to no compatibility with everything they have already built and perfected in their existing games. They would have to start from scratch, with a dev team that may not be used to the tools.

You do know there are companies who's 'sole' product are game engines for others to use to make games. there are even ones where it's a side product.
