Capping FPS causing FPS drops
Hey,
I have a weird issue on my PC where i get FPS drops when i cap my FPS on 40 or any other value. It does happen on some games and not all. In this case its happening on Dying Light 2 and Starfield. When i cap at 40 fps i get heavy stuttering between 34 and 40 fps. Same happening when caping at 60 fps, getting stuttering between 54 and 60 fps. When i uncap frames fps is smooth as butter.

I was having the same issues couple months ago and somehow fixed it ( i don't remember how) then suddenly its happening again. As said its happening in some games. For example i dont have a problem in Cyberpunk or Elden Ring. Also this is not happening on my other pc with similar specs.

I updated graphic drivers and w11 is updated as well.

My specs:

RTX 3080ti
I9 9900k
32 GB Ram
Games are installed on SSD

I capped mine to 30 and then 40 today. Best performance I've got out of the game yet.

That is vague though is it over clocked gaming ram? Is the SSD good? I use to have an SSD that my current gen 3 is 10 times faster then. I know people still using those old ones too that run at like 250mb read write and think they are good...

Nothing is overclocked. Im using Samsung Evo 860 SSD i believe.

Any kind of vsync or such turned on? Not sure how often it's a problem anymore but this sounds like an issue I used to have with it years ago.

how did you cap the fps?

I tried with vsync off and on. But only in game vsync. Also im using to cap fps with Riva Turner. However i tried caping inside Nvidia Control Panel instead with same result.

That is strange. Are you using gsync monitor/mode too?

Yes im on Gsync monitor. Tried turning off gsync and changing in options, still the same

If you have HAGS (Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling under windows graphics/display) setting on in windows, you might try toggling it. I have it turned off.

For gsync, I force vsync in NVCP and turn off in game for best results with nvidia gpu. Might not be best option if you are very input lag sensitive.

Another thing is to monitor heat. If you see heat for cpu/gpu get around +90C, then clocks drop, it is thermal throttling.

I'm going to try these whenci come home. Thanks :)

For anyone having similar issues, i fixed it by simply turning on Game Mode option in Windows settings.
