A surprisingly strange fix to FPS drops.

Hello! When I bought Starfield I installed the game like any other to where my Steam is located and began to play. I immediately noticed that I could not run the game with stable 60-fps, it was dipping hard at times and overall performance was so bad it caused the in game sound lag behind the visuals. Since I have higher than the recommended requirements I though the issue must be software.
So I went through all of my drivers, updated what I could. I went through in game settings trying to change graphics but that had no influence, then I though it may be the other Up scaling techs in game since it does not have DLSS but that also was not the issue, I simply tried what everyone of us tries when a game runs like ass.

Surprisingly enough I found out what caused the sound lags, It also completely fixed the performance issues. Suddenly I can run the game on ultra without performance dip. The solution was so strange it was simply aggravating.

I created a Steam Game folder via the Settings->Storage creating a copy of my steam on my SSD containing my operating system. This completely fixed the performance issues.
For some reason the game HAS to be stored on your SSD containing your operating system AND be located in your Steam folder clone on that drive.

I hope this can help somebody.

It needs to be on SSD though, and for some reason people in 2023 still use an SSD for the operating system and keep their games in HDD.

I have it on a SSD, and my operating system on another SSD.

This is irrelevant to what the tc described. He may have had an improvement for installing the game on his OS drive because the previous install location was on a hdd but suggesting installing alongside the OS with a clone steam folder is silly.

The game requires a ssd. If your OS is on a ssd but your steam folder is on a hdd you would want to install it on the ssd... but generally you do not want to run game like this from the same drive as your OS. Having them run from separate drives can help with system stability and general Performance.

It is not.
You commented on the state of drive status in 2023 and your personal use. This is not what I am commenting on.

But my second disk is not an HDD it is also an SSD. The only diference I could think off is that on that SSD my steam is not in the same location as my games, and it does not have operating system on it...

2. The location of Steam is not the same as the location of the games on this SSD

Exactly. This is why I did not write an implication that you were using a hdd in my post. I followed what you were saying.

Installing on you system drive is not a magic fix. It might have worked for you but there could be a whole bunch of coincidental/incidental reasons it worked.

That's awesome that your problem is solved, but what you did to solve it is not good advice. There is nothing about moving your game to your system drive that would cause a framerate increase. If anything it might cause extended loading times due to that drive having background processes accessing the drive while you're trying to do stuff in the game.

True enough, but it still fixed the issue :D...
That means it is not hardware issue that causes performance drops but either something in game optimization or some steam issue caused when installing the game.
Moving the game fixes it. Maybe someone more techsavy can find the reason for it then :3
