You saying that I am reporting incorrectly doesn't change my experience. You haven't tried it yourself as you have already said so you are in no position to say that I am not reporting correctly. You are basically finding loopholes in what I am saying to attempt to prove I am wrong despite you having no direct experience with the mechanic. Try it yourself before you say I am wrong. I am writing my experience here. I have dropped out of sight of enemies looking at me as well. If you sit in the same spot the bar will turn to "caution." You are invisible. Enemies will run to your last known location. So if I hide behind a box and drop back a little bit the enemy runs to the location they think I am at. They will see no one behind the structure that I got behind because I would have disappeared. So when they see no one I am sitting there in "caution" mode allowing further sneak attacks. They will only find you again if they run into your invisible form. If I begin combat and I am already invisible then I can simply sit there and snipe people because no one really knows where I am at.
And the simple act of hiding behind objects with -no chameleon on- does eventually remove mob interest. However with -one chameleon on- when you are exposed even while a long distance away with no mob actually pointing in your direction, just moving a notch (or quite hilariously simply panning camera without moving ground position) brings mob interest back immediately.
The whole stealth system actually seems to be broken and UNDERpowered, not overpowered.
*edit back with findings* Well that also was incorrect - just the pack alone conceals whole body including the head.
Yeah, so I actually just went to verify that this is true and it is. However, your whole body will show as invisible still even if you take off the helmet, but you will be visible. This might actually be a glitch. If I take off the helmet while crouched with chameleon then I will become visible, but when I put it back on I get hidden again. The character is shown as totally invisible either way. I play the game in first person mode so that is probably why I never ran into this potential bug. I always just assumed my head would show lmao... talk about immersion breaking.
Did you try the experiment in my last post? That is how it works. If you keep the head or body off it doesn't work, but your whole body still shows as invisible either way.
-chameleon makes zero difference when hidden behind objects. Chameleon off or chameleon on, zero difference when it comes to being behind objects and being detected.
-just tapping w key without moving at all makes the stealth meter twitch and start heading towards getting detected, even while hidden behind objects with no NPCs even looking in my direction (all backs turned).
-just panning camera up or down while a mob is moving while completely hidden and wearing chameleon causes stealth meter to show [detected]. This is not moving the character, this is moving the camera only!
I would say, go for it if you're building a stealthy sniper.
And go for it if you're going unarmed (if you're really investing in it).
Overall, I'm playing with stealth all the time in combat, both with unarmed and sniper, and really, it's true that the AI behaviour can get quite impredictable and that stealth is a hit or miss.
Unless you're playing a sniper from a distance where stealth is just priceless (but that's for open areas).
You can find a Legendary Mantis suit along with space ship in Mantis quest which has chameleon. It is ugly but who cares.
