Chameleon
Anybody else using this fun armor enhancement for their stealth playthrough? It's so broken.

Don't listen to OP, don't think he actually is reporting correctly. He's claiming when he hides behind things the chameleon makes mobs lose track, when this happens -without- the chameleon.

So the chameleon doesn't actually do anything at all in combat, as you can see from everyone else's comments in this thread.

You saying that I am reporting incorrectly doesn't change my experience. You haven't tried it yourself as you have already said so you are in no position to say that I am not reporting correctly. You are basically finding loopholes in what I am saying to attempt to prove I am wrong despite you having no direct experience with the mechanic. Try it yourself before you say I am wrong. I am writing my experience here. I have dropped out of sight of enemies looking at me as well. If you sit in the same spot the bar will turn to "caution." You are invisible. Enemies will run to your last known location. So if I hide behind a box and drop back a little bit the enemy runs to the location they think I am at. They will see no one behind the structure that I got behind because I would have disappeared. So when they see no one I am sitting there in "caution" mode allowing further sneak attacks. They will only find you again if they run into your invisible form. If I begin combat and I am already invisible then I can simply sit there and snipe people because no one really knows where I am at.

You saying
I'll test it myself (2x cham 4x stealth) to verify or disprove later, but past games don't stack chameleon effect so having 2x chameleon instead of 1x chameleon shouldn't make any difference.

And the simple act of hiding behind objects with -no chameleon on- does eventually remove mob interest. However with -one chameleon on- when you are exposed even while a long distance away with no mob actually pointing in your direction, just moving a notch (or quite hilariously simply panning camera without moving ground position) brings mob interest back immediately.

The whole stealth system actually seems to be broken and UNDERpowered, not overpowered.

Haha no way! Never been an area thing before this game then, was just an overall stealth field. Loading game a bit later, will be back with findings.

*edit back with findings* Well that also was incorrect - just the pack alone conceals whole body including the head.

Yeah, so I actually just went to verify that this is true and it is. However, your whole body will show as invisible still even if you take off the helmet, but you will be visible. This might actually be a glitch. If I take off the helmet while crouched with chameleon then I will become visible, but when I put it back on I get hidden again. The character is shown as totally invisible either way. I play the game in first person mode so that is probably why I never ran into this potential bug. I always just assumed my head would show lmao... talk about immersion breaking.

Did you try the experiment in my last post? That is how it works. If you keep the head or body off it doesn't work, but your whole body still shows as invisible either way.

Yeah first test with 1x cham 3x stealth -

-chameleon makes zero difference when hidden behind objects. Chameleon off or chameleon on, zero difference when it comes to being behind objects and being detected.

-just tapping w key without moving at all makes the stealth meter twitch and start heading towards getting detected, even while hidden behind objects with no NPCs even looking in my direction (all backs turned).

-just panning camera up or down while a mob is moving while completely hidden and wearing chameleon causes stealth meter to show [detected]. This is not moving the character, this is moving the camera only!

Stealth is broken Jim and seriously UNDERpowered.

Maybe I will record a video later of me actively using it to make it a bit easier to understand. I would have already but I can't seem to get my game bar to record. If I do it I will post a link in here. It works wonders the way I use it. I would not be able to do it if not for chameleon. I can easily get 20+ sneak attacks in longer combat scenarios.

Yep a video would be helpful. Try Bandicam or something for free and use that if gamebar won't work.

also you can move while staying invisible by gently touching the keyboard as to not break the chameleon effect, pretty handy sometimes

Chameleon is just bugged - i suspect suit weight completely overrides the effect of chameleon. that or there is some weird interaction with mass carried on you.

I used chameleon armor up until I got the mantis suit. I only had the armor, not the helmet or pack although I did find a pack with chameleon but it didn't have boost. Sometimes it worked great, sometimes they saw me right away. More often than not I was able to sneak around unhindered. But it absolutely did help. Especially with a silenced longer range run I would just one-shot bad guys in the face and move to the next. I debated still using it even after getting the mantis gear but ultimately decided not to. On the missions you have a companion with you, chameleon is about as worthless as giving your companion a grenade.

It's true that appart the visual effect, we don't really know the mechanics behind chameleon.
I would say, go for it if you're building a stealthy sniper.
And go for it if you're going unarmed (if you're really investing in it).

Overall, I'm playing with stealth all the time in combat, both with unarmed and sniper, and really, it's true that the AI behaviour can get quite impredictable and that stealth is a hit or miss.
Unless you're playing a sniper from a distance where stealth is just priceless (but that's for open areas).

I use chameleon and enemy NPC's tend to ignore me. It is not perfect invisibility but on the whole it is one of my go to options on space suit equipment. I would upgrade stealth as much as you can too.

You can find a Legendary Mantis suit along with space ship in Mantis quest which has chameleon. It is ugly but who cares.

My major issue with chameleon is, I can't see my gun sights...... Hard to snipe that way. :D Maybe a scope would show up?
