Companions useful?
Are companions useful in this game at all? Took the one skill that you have more oxygen when you have a human companion. But I've read 2 times now that the companions are always in the field of fire in combat and are just annoying. Is that true? Rather play without companions and take the skill for more oxygen WITHOUT companions?

You could completely eliminate companions by increasing carry weight. And then my grenades wouldn't be bouncing off Sarah's dumb ass head because she keeps stepping in front of me when I throw them.

Had I known how bad they still are I would take Introvert and just not fool with them.

Companions as ship crew are useful in the sense that they'll cover for skills you may not have.

Companions in the ground team are... kinda annoying to be honest.

Companions are great. Not needed, but great.

Playing without a companion means you have hald the cargo capacity on foot. Trust me, this alone makes ditching a companion a REALLY hard decision.

Don't choose a companion with a shorter range weapon than you - if you are a sniper don't have Sarah along with her pistol, running in front of you to get in range.

It IS annoying that this game doesn't include any companion direction - "go here" or "attack this" style commands - not that any Beth game ever has, but it's a pretty common thing today that would have been really nice to have.

In Skyrim, couldn't you at least tell the companions to stop in one place?

You can make them wait in one spot, but that’s not what they’re referring to. They’re talking about combat orders: go stand behind that cover, or basic stuff like: act in a support role, only attack from range. It’s either follow me or wait here, everything else is ai.

That being said I usually bring a pack mule with me, haven't had them jump out in front of my shots yet.

It was common for decades, even in Mass Effect 2 you had a reasonably complex set of orders. Bethesda is just too lazy to update their systems because mods do their work for them. Did you noice the game needs mods for DLSS and don't even have FULL SCREEN unless you modify de .ini folder? Yeah.

As in all creation engine games, they are good pack mules at the very least.
ArmedTerror Sep 8, 2023 @ 11:00am
I find them to bhe useful as pack mules. They step in front of me all the time though. Sometimes for no reason at all. Let me just mine this rock... NOPE! Now I am putting a laser sized hole in Sarah's head...

Every game that has had mechanics to order my companions around has been something that I just haven't wanted to bother with. I'm focused on me and that's it. And having to order companions around would definitely be in the "breaking immersion" category.

I am sure there will be mods to fix this.

Nope. Before I uninstalled at 12 hours of insipid boring game play, I kept shooting Sarah in the head trying to make her shut the hell up. They are just stupid mules. They repeat the same BS over and over. They are always in the way.

I doubt it, FO4 never had any mods that made the companion AI any better just sexier.

Considering that I'm fist punching my way through the entire game, a ranged fighter is perfect for me.

Sarah has been an immense help on the harder settings.

The only time that she was turned into egg salad was when we fought the two Terrormorphs.

Other than that, she hasn't died very often because I sprint towards every enemy to distract them. Need to keep her alive for support as much as possible.
