Absolutely no reason to make it a 2D map, if they had bothered to rip off 1% of the functionality of Eve's janky star map system nobody would be upset
True that. X3 had an amazing 3D map of the sectors (even if otherwise it was sector to sector). You could flip the sector map from an XY view to an XZ view to figure out where you were relative to up spin and down spin in the sector.
