capture a ship but dont auto make it home ship?

so right now when i do manage to capture ships its because i blow the engines up. naturally when i takeover the ship im not carrying 20 pounds of ship parts so when it switches over im just stuck in this broken ass ship. cant i just capture the ship and keep flying my own ship?

At least with my testing it does not seem to count the ship as yours until you have landed the broken ship somewhere. I tried a number of different scenarios with trying to grab control of the new ship, undock and redock and get back in mine. Every time as long as I am in the broken ships pilot seat its shown in my Tab screen > Ships page as mine. But the instant I stand up from the pilots chair it disappears. Once you land it makes it your home ship and adds it to your collection. I at least see no other way to claim them. May want to keep some of those ship parts handy to repair up or just drop in at a city with a ship tech to switch right back after landing.

Give your companions ship parts to carry. But yeah I agree, it should not auto switch that is a pita.
