Mystery - decent 4K performance on a GTX 1080 Ti
Need some expertise about some technical mystery.

Have a old but decent 1080Ti OC (technically below min specs), 3DMark tells comparable with a RTX 3060 performance wise, but of course not feature wise. Have an older 4k 60Hz display with no special extras.
Whole rig is aging but still doing well.

While playing around with display settings to get a satifying setup I stumbled upon this:
With exactly these settings I found a sweet spot: https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/2032867441618765873/91B6A5CEBCFE2162A6340EF0FD6D88CFA3D960C5/

I get a fluent framerate of 30 outdoors and 40-45fps indoors with crisp textures throughout whole game. On 4K with a GPU that does not meet requirements.

BUT:
Whenever I touch one single setting fps drop to 15-20. For example changing shadows or GTAO just one step up or down leads to half performance. Fiddling with upscaling (with this GPU does not even support) ends in 15-20fps.

Can restore this sweet spot reliably this way:
set ultra first, then high and then lowering others. Every other way ends in low fps.

Not omplaining, just looking for some technical insight and explanation of this technical wonder.

Any ideas ?

nvidia shadowplay, microsoft xbar can record. use msi afterburner too.
Lets see your setup running the game " 30-50 at 1440p medium settings, no fsr, native".
Show new atlantis. show settings too.

lemme retry then, but you know damn well you saw the settings and me moving around smooth

FSR2 off around 25-35@4k, depending on environment. Native 3840x2160@60Hz on monitor.

Mysterious indeed, my game crashes far too often and I use a 1080ti too.

Thats because it runs horribly on a 1080ti, and crazy people on this board are advertising sub 30fps as being "good" while also ommiting the fact that they have all sorts of settings (dynamic res, fsr, res scaling, etc.) messed with too.

With that render scaling you render it at like just above 1080p. And get 30 frames, which is frankly not a playable frame rate. We have different ideas about what good performance is. But it is to be expected on such an old card.

720p at 30fps seems about right, i get 50-60 on low/medium settings at 720p on rtx3060 except for some cities and planets

edit: wait i think youre actually above 1080p at that percentage if u play on 4k. so it would be indeed similar perf as my card

id probably settle for 1440p at 720p/50%, then max FSR2 sharpness, and add even more sharpness with nvidia game filter. im playing pretty far away from my screen so i cant notice oversharpening effects at all, instead it looks like 1440p/4k, maybe up close one needs to lowert sharpness a little though

1080 Generation cards is the best ones to date.
Its one type of card in 100 years.
Was Absolutely amazing back then, still rocks today and in the future will be remember forever.

540p at 30 fps is hardly "rocks today" lol

In your the pic you posted showed dynamic resolution enabled. FSR enable.
So its not 4k. no need to lie.
Also we have to take your world what settings and what hardware you have. No mention of CPU.
plus people here on this forum from what i have seen yesterday and today have been lying on a constant basis.
Don;t know why would they want to mislead other gamers.
I bought the game because of such gamers like yourself and because I believed a liar like Tod.
Now I cannot play.

I don't get it man, these people are just flat out misleading potential customers because they refuse to acknowledge optimisation is an issue in a game they like. Like.. you don't need to defend it, the game can still be good with flaws.

i mean he recorded one of the least taxing areas on the gpu lol. the second he'll hit atlantis, mars or niira he'll drop in the 20s or lower at his actual render resolution of 1080p (ish), it seems accurate

he said: "heck i'm only running a i 4770k and running 30-50 at 1440p medium settings, no fsr, native resolution, no motion blur and grain effect all the way down 1080 ti kicking butt"
he did not said i am running the at 30-50 in some areas. but below in rest.

I bet he was not honest. I bet his pc runs the game in new atlantis below 30 fps even maybe below 20. I specifically asked him to record there but he didn't.
these people.
kicking but at below 30 fps.
i trust hardware unboxed, gamers nexus and my eyes rather then fudged cherry picked weird stuff from strangers on the internet.
my bad, i thought u were talking about the thread starter instead of dcbobo
