I'm a Mint user, but it just kept hard locking my system on clicking New Game. The main menu, settings etc worked fine, but clicking New Game gave me a busy icon for a few seconds, then a screen flicker (I think the GFX drivers crash at this point), then a hard lock, only fix was a power cycle.
I can play Fallout 4, with mods, just fine on Mint. (Plus most other Steam games). So just some issue specific to Starfield.
Protondb shows other Linux users playing just fine. so maybe it just doesn't like Mint, or something else on my system.
I'm dual boot, so I'm playing in Win 10 for now.
My other question: is the story, models, space exploration with my ship better and more fun on Linux with proton? I mean, I wish I could run the game, but, enjoying it would be so much better and would make me purchase this game instant.
System is up to date, and I've tried Proton experimental and the latest Proton GE, same result each time.
Wait, EDIT : a good start would be for em' to redo the game (or just do a propper game then). Then, after a year and 10000 patches, maybe we'll be able to talk about optimization and compatibility :D.
Anyways, as this game is backed by M$, I think that Linux comptability won't be their priority. Maybe the deck will get sufficient support because of the AMD partnership and the APU in the deck are from em', but that would be the only positive thing to note (if talking about accessing a game you paid 70€ is a positive thing, and not the 101 basic function of a game, first).
SOOOOO,
I'll continue sticking with BG3 where I can get an optimized game with full linux compatibility (it worked OOTB on POP!OS) and real fun for hundreds of hours with my GF or in solo runs.
Thanks for the replies! Anyways, I believe the linux community (minus the deck community) won't lose its time with that "game", as we are much more demanding with quality games than the average Wintrash user.
Love the forums though, fun to read and it's like a minigame with better narration and twist than the "game".
So you could buy, try, see if it works okay for you, and refund if not. No harm done.
Alternately of course just wait 6 months, lots of patches and updates, to game, drivers, Proton etc. And you never know, maybe even a discount :-)
2. I don't want to add to the count of "players" of this game by logging in.
3. I"ll try fitgirls repack probably first.
So far i played 31 hrs of Starfield via Proton, no issues so far.
Aside from the performance issues which are also a problem on Windows even with high-end systems.
I play on the following specs:
Ryzen 7 7800X3D
Radeon 7900XTX
32 GB of DDR5 RAm @ 6000 Mhz
Manjaro Linux @ Kernel 6.5
It has no Linux native binary, so you still need proton for it to run. Well ofc you just click "install" and then "play", but still there is proton involved.
Same for me with Starfield. Just installed and started playing.
Another guy wrote that it works fine with Experimental Proton with Nvidia drivers 530.41.03.
Another person had problem with Nvidia 535 and got it to work when downgrading to 525.
The most common denominator that i've seen is that people using Nvidia 530+ version has problem while 525 works best.
This launch option may also help:
I actually own BG3 and the Proton tickbox you are talking about is only required if you want to use a certain proton version for a certain game (some games require to use specific proton versions) or if you want to use custom proton variants.
If it is not checked the default proton version from your steam settings will be used.
Again: BG3 has no native Linux binary. It will issue system calls not suited for linux which need to be translated to linux compatible system calls (this is basically all proton does).
