You can set up whole trade networks between your outposts and automated assembly
I recommend making an Outpost that mines Iron and Copper first as that's the most needed items you'll need for general Outpost construction
All research required items can be bought from one of the first vendors in Atlantis.
Look for the rarer materials to mine.
Still working on getting mine set up, for mining that is. Might make a home base later on.
You can also use a main outpost as storage facility so you can unload all the crap from your ships inventory which may be of particular interest if you want to fly smaller ships with less cargo space, but want to keep your resources somewhere. I currently have over 4000 "mass" (whatever unit the game uses) worth of resources stored in my base. Allows me to keep flying a smaller more agile ship with less cargo space, rather than a huge hauler.
Outpost system right now is barebones, but foundation is good and there is a possibility that they will improve it.
There is no reason to mine either, basic components are affordable. Buying them is much faster and hassle free than running around with a cutter.
You do get more buildings as you research them in the research terminal and with the proper perks.
The manufacturing is really cool but the supply lines are what I find frustrating. It's not like fallout 4 where you just send the cow and everything is ready for you to build at your next outpost. You have to set up cargo links and have everything organized the way you want it sent. Example, if you have an Aluminum producing base your going to have to organize your harvester to the outgoing box and then configure it to where you want it to go next. I find it easier to create a cental base and dump all your resources in. Like creating a massive distribution center. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
You will be fast traveling around to vendors alot to pick up random resources. Which can also get kinda annoying. Small tip, create an iron and aluminum base first.
TLDR
Pure creativity, I think fallout 4 is better. For creating a manufacturing empire then I believe Starfield is better. Despite what I said. I've had a lot of fun and have spent more time with building outpost and ships than i probably should have.
I def agree there needs to be more creative options...even things like bigger doors and habs, concrete platforms and walkways, so you can recreate some of the factories you come across. Its fun, but at the moment the outposts feel very functional, rather than creative.
I would love to have Concrete platforms. just to be able to change the way the ground looks. Give it that true Industrial/ established look.
