Thank you so much for this. It's a MUCH better solution than what I have been doing. GIving you not one, but two, useless steam point awards. You deserve 'em for taking the time to provide this helpful info.
I've never been so rich in steam rewards before! Thanks man!
I basically did the same thing onlly my version is "F:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Starfield\sfse_loader.exe" -- %COMMAND%
as its on different install path. SFSE loads fine but I still do not have steam overlay working
Take my points. You sexy beast.
That's unfortunate. Some graphical mods do cause issue with it. Are you running the XESS or DLSS mod with reshade, or something similar? I know through testing the Upscaler Mod from PureDark at Nexus will absolutely interfere with the Overlay, even with this fix.
That's why I was so jazzed to get such simple, elegant solution.
Edit: I'm not using the Reshade one though, maybe that's why? I use Nvidia Filters, so no need for Reshade.
Yeah I am using PureDarks Starfield Upscaler - Replacing FSR2 with DLSS or XeSS, although I am using the No Reshade Standalone version and prior to installing SFSE the overlay was working fine.
It should work i've done this with skyrim, fo4 and other bethesda games.
PureDarks reshade mod 100% interferes with the Steam Overlay, or atleast did for me and a few others. But if your overlay was working, why did you need to load the SFSE? For other mods I presume? Also, I didn't buy his standalone, so I can't vouch for it for my personal tests.
Only issue with that is that if you remove the "non-steam game" later you'll lose the screenshots for it. Which may not be a big deal for some, but some folks desiring neatness may have issue. If it works, the command line option is a good remedy, IMHO.
NVIDIA Filters don't generally mess with the Steam Overlay as it's different injection/overlay method.
That makes sense.
This is exactly my conundrum right now. I wanna mod it, but I don't wanna lose playtime count, steam overlay etc.
How exactly would a mod manager fix this?
Install one and try it. What's the issue?
I use tons of mods that are currently fairly basic as the Creation Kit isn't out yet. Modding for me makes the game less... mediocre. BTW using SFSE, Steam still tracks my game playtime so that's not an issue. I use vortex, you can install manually or use Mod Organiser, whatever is your preference.
So the basic you will need:
-Changing to whatever your install folder is, above is an example.
This will launch SFSE everytime you use the regular games shortcut and allow the overlay provided you are not using the reshade version of DLSS mod. Make sure SFSE.exe is not set to administrator or you wont get an overlay.
-Many times mods will not work if they are in the games install Data folder when there is a data folder in My Games/Starfield/Data/ and if you have Starfield installed on a fast NVMe and your C: is slower you will potentially notice a performance difference in loading if you use a lot of textures and your C: is slow.
-The textures look more detailed than the bethesda versions and dont use more resources, in many cases they use less.
-With The my Games folder disabled, Vortex works as expected. You should have an overlay (I use SFSE and many mods and I have Steam overlay and my game time is tracked as usual)
Anyway I hope that helps. This game is SOOOO much better with mods then the garbage vanilla.
