How do I switch ships?
So, here I am still in the early hours of the game when I notice another ship land in the distance.
So, I decide to pause my impromptu mining trip (I need all the goodies, my spine hurts, help) to investigate.
I find a ship with a turret indoors that just shot one of their own crew members dead before I could get up the ladder. I destroy the turret and head to the bridge and encounter at least five people, all of who look like they couldn't care less that their friend just died. I can't get anything more then a hello out of them, but the game let me pilot their ship.

Their ship is better in many ways compared to the starter ship, but it has a smaller cargo hold. Which is a nightmare for a loot gremlin like me who will walk around 200lbs over the encumbering limit just to carry more stuff.
But imagine my surprise when I can't switch back to the old ship.

From what I heard, you can do it within a "modify ship menu" but I can't seem to find that. Do I need a specific skill or is this button hiding away somewhere in my menus.

Thank you again.

Have to land at the landing area of major settlements/cities. There will be guy nearby that sell ships, and lets you modify your existing ships

Visit a ship services technician in a city. They're located near the spaceport. Talk to them about modifying your ship. Now you can select between them. To use one, press H to set it as your home ship. It will appear on the landing pad and your current cargo hold will go into the new ship.

If you go into the modify ship menu but before you start modifying the ship there should be two arrows surrounding the name of your ship. Click on those and it should cycle through your ships.

Once you have the ship you want to use selected look at the bottom right and press the button labels something like "Make this my Home Ship"

Other replies are correct but you have to do it from the ship services technician menu (or ship builder kiosks) you aren't able to change home ships just from opening the menu during your travels.

Yeah, its pretty terrible how taking ships works right now. The fact your cargo gets auto booted is asinine. You ~should~ be able to takeover a ship, fly it to a port and register it while your other ship keeps a crew (i mean, how else is it going to follow you) and the cargo within. The cargo should only go to another ship if you choose to transfer it between themselves at a dock.

Too bad the steam forums are hijacked by useless yahtzees right now. Use the reddit forum if you want to discuss actual mechanics.

Yah I didn't make that clear. I assumed they were trying from that menu
