How to pick things up in the world?
In previous Bethesda games, you could hold E or press Z to, for example, pick up a cup off the floor and place it on a table.

I am collecting desk ornaments and I want to put them on my ship's table.

How do I drop them out of my inventory and get them on the table?

edit: it is still hold E, but it doesn't work for everything (like barrett's note on the nav table, which ofc is the first item I used for testing).

it's still the same. holding E on item lets you move it around instead of putting in your inventory

From inventory, mouse over the item and hit the drop key. For me that key is "R" but I don't recall if I rebound it or not. Then just pick it up and move it where you wanted.

Edit: also, just as an fyi, if/when you get a new ship, anything you have placed around inside of it will be dumped to the cargo hold of your new ship. So make sure, when changing to a new ship, that you leave enough room in the cargo hold for everything you decorated with.
