Can You Really Call This an Open-World Game?
Serious question. Starfield is currently tagged as Open World on Steam.

The world map being seamlessly connected is the most important facet. Yes, loading screens for dungeons and buildings are suboptimal, but those were technical limitations of the times 10 years ago.
And loading screens between the several planets are an obvious technical limitation these days. Confused about the double standard.

There's no double standard. People will always be fine that there's a loading screen when they open a door or go in an elevator.

And they will always be pissed when there's an invisibe wall, a floating text box to tell them they need to go back, or that the planet they spend an hour to travel to is a low poly jpeg you cant interact with.

It's all about diegesis. Very very basic game design they got totally backward and regressed here.

the "open world map" would have to cover 1000 planets without loading screens and it wouldn't run on any hardware. so it's not.

Nope. Not even close. Instance to instance to instance is NOT 'Open World'. At least not in any way a reasonable person would define it.

Tags are user made. We could write "loading simulator" and that would show up if enough people did it.

The developer has only listed one genre (I think that is even more wrong) and that is RPG.

That being said, you can pretty much call anything what you want now a days and fake open world is rather common (with hub to hub) so I don´t think openworld is misleading in any way.

What are some high profile examples of open world games that are actually hub to hub? I know Witcher 3 was like that for its different regions but the regions themselves were pretty seamless.

You can call a cheese sandwich an open world game.

Starfield, however, is an open world game.
serious answer: yes.

How do you define open world?

And what about Starfield is open world?

Yes, it's open world.

An open world [game] is a virtual world in which the player can approach objectives freely, as opposed to a world with more linear and structured gameplay.

How much freedom did you have doing the main quest?

I rather turn it around. What game does not have hub to hub if they have a blend of Action Adventure or even RPG elements.

Depends on how you define open world.

I always believed it to mean that you can go anywhere you want at any time. There is no fixed path and/or storyline.

Agree with this, and Yes Starfield IS an open world, it has nothing to do with loading screens or not.

It actually is an open world. You can make your own choices and follow your own path, unlike other games people have been mentioning here (with the exception of NMS). Unlike all of the other games mentioned, this game doesn't spoon feed you content. There is a TON of content, but you have to pay attention to the game world to find it. If you're one to go running around ignoring NPC convos and queues, then you'll miss out big time.

You can walk to wherever you want. Now, flying down to a planet? It'll take hours for that to happen. I may try it this weekend and see if anything happens. You are able to select your own landing sites from orbit, and wander as long as you like on the surface. Fast travel is a conveneince to add to the enjoyment of the game. You can choose to use it or not. Sheesh, even NMS had fast travel in the form of portals (ancient and player made).
