As far as legitimate construction goes, you need to max your Ship Construction skill to build the most impressive ships and also Piloting, otherwise you won't be able to fly them.
I do plan on building an all turret battleship looking ship once i get some more cash.
You can literally build the most overpowered ship by upgrading your starting ship components.

Kind of true. At some point you will still hit a area where the upgraded part needs your skill. Like you want that bigger reactor that is a B or C class. Which you will need if you want the better engines ... ect. your Ship type is not the ship itself but based on the parts.
That said if you are not planning on doing a lot of ship fighting the base level stuff is fine for anything main story related.
That's landing pads, not planetary lands. You can potentially make a ship 80x80, but they don't suggest it.
Yeah I've had the message twice now. The solution was simple: Bigger ♥♥♥♥-off engines to make it go more faster.
