they ain't gonna make a new engine that takes 5-6 years to develop and then another couple of years to train people to use it

They're very unlikely to make a new engine. They will continue to tweak this one, so the future games will be samey.

You develop games and engines in parallel, and switch over when ready.

apart from certain aspects I was perfectly content with the previous engine
