When they are assigned to your ship or outposts, you gain their perks.

Their skills such as piloting and lasers are added to yours on the ship.

Crew is needed for things like piloting, managing weapons, outpost managing - all these things instead the player character. There are weapons that require on board to be people with skills that match them or you can't fire them manually. I did this mistake once and had to fight with missiles alone until the next port visit

You will get benefits of the skills they have for eiither yourself, your ship or your outposts. So for example you have a crew memeber with piloting, and your ship will handle better as if you had the piloting skill. If you take a person with Botany skill, you will find more rare items when looting plants and so on.

whatever perks they have, they get added to your current perk lvl ect. so if one has the targeting systems perk and you don't. you get access to that perk because of them

So they do everything then? Two negatives is a positive.

People assigned to the actual crew of your ship grant their spaceship skills to the effectiveness of your ship. For example, Sam Coe has the Payload skill (increased cargo space), so assigning him to the crew of your ship increases your cargo space, in addition to his other skills.

so if im not picking flowers or kicking over rocks that leaves the bonuses because i fly i shoot right? So they are just worth the bonus then

I just have Sam's mission idle in my mission log all this time...left him sitting in the Lodge after meeting him because I didn't want a kid on my ship. And NOW you tell me that.

I know what I'm doing next.

Guess I should have looked at what his perks were before ignoring him.

No point yet. They will be of use once the adult mods get released.

Cora's a pretty cool kid, as is Sam and her's relationship.
