Game looks terrible in HDR on OLED
Washed out grey, too bright and not a lot of blacks. Easily one of the worst looking modern games I've played. I notice there are no gamma/brightness or HDR sliders anywhere so I used auto HDR settings to increase intensity but it didn't do much good. I'm still in the beginning mine area so maybe it improves but it's hard to feel immersed. Is this something on my end or does the game really look this ugly in HDR?

One of the reshade mods helped a lot to bring the blacks back. It's not perfect but maybe playable.

Because BGS couldn't even be bothered to include a brightness/gamma slider

Honestly can't think of any other PC game esp recent that didn't even have that. And no FOV adjusting of course (well only through INI tweak).

Ultrawide support is garbo as well. Crops the screen and gives less visibility than 16:9. Would have to mess with FOV in the ini.. Also my performance is bad for how poor the game looks.

Yarp.

As for the game its self. I played ~5-6 hours on gamepass. And just could not get into it. Just was bored out of my mind.

But for those that like it that's great, enjoy it. Bored me to tears though

Best HDR mod right now:

It's really a shame they do not have native HDR in the game: instant eye candy without sacrificing performance. Looks like nobody has a good HDR screen at Bethesda...

You think they have heard of HDR?

I used ReShade with a preset from nexusmods as well as an enhanced contrast version of the LUTs and the game looks phenomenal now. Completely night and day difference! Who knew the game was so beautiful under all that gray?

I'm using the gamepass version so those on steam might need to get an autohdr mod if they have an HDR display and Windows is not detecting the game. To install ReShade with gamepass you need to pick gamelaunchhelper.exe instead of starfield.exe.

Adjust your settings or get a GPU that can take advantage of an OLED. my 7900XTX+55" LG C2 with maxed settings and the game is quite good looking.

I hear you. The community has been busy modding proper Native HDR support in, which is now available. As a fellow OLED user, I'm quite confident you will be very happy with this mod: https://www.nexusmods.com/starfield/mods/588. It's not like other Reshade presets you may find that attempts to dim the black levels and stuff like that. This will upgrade the internal color precision formats and produces a scRGB/HDR10 swapchain, which can be tonemapped. Read the tutorial and make sure you configure it properly. You can see some of the posts and the forums for the correct settings.

I didn't have to adjust anything.

So which settings are you suggesting they change?

Looks fine to me, have you used the Microsoft Calibration tool?

I might add, that it doesn't seem to have an HDR mode. Although the picture looks OK, it doesn't look HDR.

my VA monitor has far better contrast than my oled and doesn't have the overdone whites of oled; starfield looks way better on my va monitor as a result
