Stuff like this is indeed a poor weapon, will hurt you at point blank range but it lacks any kind of launching that would really work at range. Its amusing, but sort of dumb too. Its like a construction heavy staple gun... it will impale you at skin-touches range, but at even 2 feet it is no different from throwing a staple at someone.
End of the day I don't look for too much realism in games. Heck every game I've seen the last 3 decades has you finding ammo and firearms everywhere, even in refrigerators, and being somebody who lives in ammo-and-gun-intensive Rural America, I can promise you that even we don't just chuck boxes of ammo and a .38 special revolver into the fridge to keep it from spoiling (or whatever whomever does that is thinking lol).
