Can you edit the Frontier ship?
as in, modify the starting ship? I'm trying to add cargo modules but it seems it is at max weight so it gives an error / you can't save the changes. And I checked every other module and cant remove anything to add more total mass afaik.

Am I missing anything? Can you only build / mod with the other ships than the Frontier?

No, you can basically completely change everything, but modifying ships tends to be a snowball of problems like you described.

yes.
you can't save because your getting the error
You need to add more (thrust) engines to move the extra mass
I added a better reactor at the same time.. this may not be needed but you have to balance those stats and follow a few basic rules (like don't block the docking bay) so it's flight worthy and doesn't tear itself apart

As long as you follow the rules of shipbuilding then yes. It can be kind of time consuming to figure it out initially though.

You can change the ship completely. Go into ship builder to add/remove parts as you need. You'll probably need to add more engines to account for the added mass. Eventually you'll even need to add more landing gears.

Just remember you can use the Flight Check option listed in the lower right to see anything that needs to be fixed before you can save your changes.

And you as far as I have gotten into the game you can never sell the frontier ship.

You also cant not move parts between ships.

But you can buy/steal/find other ships they are all editable.

You need a registered ship to build a new one or remodel the one you have, the Frontier works just fine. You will also need several perks in the Tech. tree before you can take the Startship Design perk which is required.

ship building can be a bit clunky at first - but once you've played with it for awhile - it gets better

a few warnings/heads up things -

if you sell a hab? everything all the cups, pens, folders, food/aid items ect? - they all get dumped into your inventory. (same with selling ships..)

some part you can only have 1 of. (even if 2 would make it look better - i HATE those side shield mounts.

structure - while helps ship look cool - also adds weight / thus hurting your maneuverability

most habs only have certain access points - where doors/stairs will link up.

double clicking with grab the whole thing. be it ship - or if you say make a sub part - like some cool engine set up - you can double click it to move it all as one

When you modify the frontier, do the modifications carry over to the NG+ stuff?
I read that you get some suit, new ship, and frontier, but the read didn't really get into if it was a modified frontier or goes back to base version.

Didn't see anything on forums yet.

I havent tested myself but I'm 99.9999% sure it reverts to default version, like everything else.

BE EXTRA CAUTIOUS WITH SHIPS : CHECK AND SAVE VERY OFTEN.

(spoilers ahead)

I ran into game breaking bugs : if suddenly you can't interact with your armilary screen anymore, reload an older save and make sure it works, since it soft locks access to NG+ (don't think its fixable without teleporting to the end game with commands).

Same thing if you get your hatch marked "innacessible". You can get it to work again with ship modifications somehow, but it seems to cause other problems too. Not sure if theres a link between this and the armilary bug.

Doing the freestar rangers questline before the crimson fleet one bugged out so i didnt get the star eagle as a reward.
Crimson fleet ships bugged out too : I didnt get the notification for a new home ship after getting the shuttle. Then I got the prototype ship stuck in my fleet (didnt disappear, impossible to use, sell or remove it afterwards).

Ship technician could not repair my ships anymore (he kept taking 1000 credits, but ship hps stayed low)

All those bugs kept pilling up so i had to go back about 40 hours earlier to get a bug free save.

Take care of your ships. Check the hatch, armilary screen and repair status often.ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU'RE ABOUT TO GET A NEW SHIP, MODIFY A SHIP OR DO A QUEST INVOLVING AN OTHER SHIP.

Make a TON of saves and store them in backup folders.

No carry-over for Frontier, you start with the vanilla ship. Only the Starborn items upgrade as you progress through the NG+ ladder.

Yes, it can be sold but it takes a "trick." You have to sell it at below its listed price. Even one credit lower is OK. But to do this you have to get the Ship Technician buyer's bank below that listed price. Then when you try to sell it, the game gives you the warning about not getting full price. Click to OK the sale and you're good. Since you don't have to register Frontier, the sale is all profit, even if sold below "Blue Book." :D

Same goes for the Starborn ships (Guardians).

PS. I hijack a lot of bad guys' ships, and to get the Ship Tech's bank down, I sell off bits and pieces of these ships in the Shipbuilder. You have to register hijacked ships but you need to do that to sell them whole anyway. After you sell Frontier or a Guardian, you can then also sell your stripped down ship for enough to cover the registration if the buyer still has enough credits, or at another Ship Tech's location.
