Has anyone figured out how unlocking ship parts works?
I've noticed some slowly becoming available over time, but it's mostly things like weapons, engines, reactors and grav drives. Haven't unlocked any actual hab or structure sets, besides the pieces that are available on a captured ship, which can't be duplicated.

Go and find a Research Lab station and then as long as you're upgrading the right talents you should be able to unlock the different trees and upgraded parts, etc.

Different vendors have different ship parts. As an example, if you want more Stroud Eklund parts, you'd find most of them at the Stroud Eklund shop on Neon.

You wil need skils to unlock B and C class ships, i figure when you unlock these ships the modules are also unlocked altough i am not sure about that. Maybe the modules require a different skil to be unlocked

I have absolutely no idea whether this is a bug or a bad design choice.
You have one or two options for each part when you use "upgrade my ship" but there are hundreds of parts available when you use the ship builder. The game really doesn't tell you jack-sh*t how some mechanics work and you have to figure it out on your own.

I recently discovered that you can actually have up to three guns of the same type, adding to a weapon system's power. As long as you dont exceed the max power (10 bars), the builder doesn't complain.

I think the issue is that you are using the same brand and series. So Dwarf Star engines; you have model x1010, they show you x1000 and x1020. It seems it's only a direct model upgrade, or downgrade in some cases

Visit different ship builders for parts, some parts you can get from stealing ships and the rest from builders. Upgrading starship design will give you access to the default stuff. Some parts also require you to upgrade starship engineering.

Build outpost with 'Landing pad with ship building' Have access to most if not all parts.

You're welcome.

Kill stuff. I've noticed some parts unlock at certain levels. And then of course for the different reactor classes, you need to invest some time leveling up your tech to get the piloting classes. Finally, different parts come from different places. I like the selection on Akila better than on New Atlantis for example.

That's the basics anyway. You might also unlock some via research.

This is the answer. Sounds like the outpost with landing pad + ship building is a good option for avoiding the need to find the right salesperson.

How so? It's 100% correct. For such an elaborate ship building system there's surprisingly nothing to do with your ship. It's a glorified storage chest. From time to time you get into unbelievably shallow space combat, which feels like 80s arcade game. That's it. There's literally nothing else you can do with it. Nothing. You can't go places, because there's no travel in the game. It's just loading screens. There are no meaningful activities that involve your ship. None whatsoever. All ships can participate in every random encounter equally as well too. You can hail random ships no matter what ship you have. Watch a docking, landing, taking off cutscene in every ship all the same. You have very little control over your ship, you can just look at it in loading screens. So it matters very little what ship you actually have.

It's almost like this isn't a flight sim. You're so caught up on loading screens that you're not even bothering to realize that you sure as hell wouldn't be doing anything except waiting, if the game gave you the option to manually fly everywhere. You do realize it's called space for a reason, right? So what does that leave? Taking off and landing? Is that what you define as making ships useful? lol
