I remember the same, but in starfield it does not do this.
The only way to go unarmed is to quite literally go into inventory and unequip whatever you're using now.
Inside should be "StarfieldCustom.ini" file, add to it next section:
[Menu]
bUseConsoleHotkeys=1
sConsoleINI=StarfieldConsole.ini
Create "StarfieldConsole.ini" text file next to it, and add next section:
[Hotkeys]
Shift-F=player.cf "Actor.EquipItem" 1F4 0 1
Now you can "equip" fists with "Shift-F" hotkey.
Replace hotkey for something you like.
Now you can Fistfight without going to inventory or using mods.
And that is actually the way to add any hotkeys missing in default game options without mods.
Note: Doing so didn't disable achievements for me,
There is a hotkey to holster your weapon, but the moment you pull the trigger your current weapon will be used not your fists.
There is no hotkey for unequip weapon.
The only way to unequip and use your fists is to go into the menu system, go into weapons, and deselect your weapon.
This is of course ridiculous and breaks immersion.
To make matters worse it's not like unarmed strikes are meant to be irrelevant in Starfield because there are various skills/perks that deal with unarmed strikes.
Considering about 5% - 8% of all the skills available are based on levelling up your fist fighting ability, you'd think that the testers who played Starfield for thousands of hours would have revealed this issue (of no easy way to switch to fist fighting as easy as changing your weapon.)
I can't imagine game testers going into the menu then weapons menu and then unequip a weapon when testing these skills/perks.
The obvious answer to this is that Bethesda never hired any game testers, which also goes a long way to explaining Starfields massive big issue. Example the bugs that I have to live with currently:
1: ship stats especially shield are broken due to developers inability to add numbers correctly
2: skill rejuvenation level 3/4 healing during combat is broken due to developer multiplying your healing factor by zero
3: eventually all enemy ships that land will no longer have people on board ruining the game further
4. Self clear bounty system is broken, I get attacked by UC even after clearing all outstanding bounties on my character
5. Inter system outpost cargo links always fail within a few hours of setting up correctly
My recommendations to Bethesda:
1. hire developers with an understanding of addition, subtraction, division and multiplication
2. Hire game testers to actually play the game and when they highlight issues, have your team change the game to eliminate these issues.
For anybody curious, this worked like a charm. I personally changed the hotkey, but it worked like a charm. Remember that it will need to be a configuration file (.ini), not a '.txt' notepad file.
Huge cheers to Keyesty!
