How to grow plants?
I am making a small base/home. I put up a hydroponics hab and I have no clue as to how to plant anything. What do I need to do to get that started?

-Hydroponics Habs are completely useless (they don't grow anything as of now)
-To grow plants, you will need to get the botany skill in the skill tree
-Botany skill will unlock the greenhouse building ONCE you have fully scanned a plant on a planet that can be grown in a greenhouse (plant description while scanning will tell you if it can be grown)
-Greenhouses can only grow plants found on that planet (which means you can't build a greenhouse on planets that don't have growable plants naturally)
-Greenhouses require water to grow
-So far biproducts of plants that I have seen myself are hallucinogen, toxin, and nutrient

You've gotta put points into the Botany skill.

ahh gotcha, thanks!

There is a lot that you can't do without investing skill points in various areas.

It's the main reason why people are held back from progressing quickly in other aspects of the game. You can't be good at everything all at once.

It will take hundreds of hours.

Doesn't seem like there is much info out there, especially given the 'issues' with review copies. Maybe you are the first! Figure it out and let us know?

You need to build it on a planet with plants that can be grown. Scan the plants to 100% and in the description it will say if you can farm it. You can only grow plants from that planet that have this in the description.

You then press e on the console next to the door of the farm to choose what to grow. Then supply it with water via a link

I know in Fallout 4 you needed the fruit/vegetable in your resources to plant them and you had to interact with a soil plot. So if you want to plant tomatoes then you'd need to have some tomatoes on you and interact with a soil plot in the Hydroponics Habitat. Although I haven't done very much with Outposts yet. All I've got is a Chlorine Harvester and a Water Harvester on Earth. Make sure there's sufficient power for the outpost too.

so once you get the botany skill, a new thing will open up for the base. A greenhouse. Makes sense, but what's the point of the hydroponic hab then? I'll get the materials and make the greenhouse and see what happens after.

I can now 100% confirm this and also the hydroponics hab is just a room. It has nothing to do with your farming or anything.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

If you scanned a planet to 100% before you took the skill, then take the skill after that the greenhouse will not show in your build list. You have to rescan at least one harvestable plant to get it to show.

After that when you look at the console menu for the greenhouse it will list every resource that can be harvested on that planet, but you will need to rescan every one of those plants again one time.

Done all this and it doesn't show for me. You cant re-scan when you are at 100%. You can push scan but nothing happens. I've harvested a plant but it still doesnt show. Yes I have the botany skill.

Not all plants can be farmed, in fact they are a minority. make sure you have a plant on the planet you are building on called that has a description like this:
