There are times when you can use picks in the wrong place (i.e. even though they fit, it wasn't the right place to use it) resulting in an unsolvable lock. But I have yet to see one that can't be solved if you do not do that.
every one is solvable.
For example, one of my locks had only 1 available 1 "tick" on the right, but the lock itself had 2 rings that required 1 tick, thus meaning I was unable to actually solve the lock.
It's not a 5head 600iq concept, man. You're matching shapes to holes, but sometimes they don't give you enough shapes that fit the right holes.
When a puzzle requires two rings that have only one hole, but they only give you one shape that has a 1 shape slot, you're boned at that point.
It's like if I gave you a puzzle with 2 triangles in it, but only gave you one triangle shape.
