They're most often used as exit shortcuts once you finish a quest area. If you enter a new location and encounter one almost immediately, then that's what it's for.
Other doors will require a specific key; those are usually quest entrances, not exits.
computers also control robot enemy (can make allied!) and turrets (same, make allied or turn off) and occasionally have useful info in them. Learn to recognize the 'hidden' terminals.
