There's too many times where I have the options to ask questions about people I already know and factions I'm with but my character is forced to act like I have no idea what those things are.
Not true for me. I'm treated like a Vanguard everywhere I go.
I only joined because at the beginning of the game I was exploring options and didn't know what I was doing.
It has affected a small portion of my playthrough, so far.
However, I explore every corner of these systems and run into all sorts of people. Most folks don't play that way because they think this game is a waste of time.
Maybe it is.
I joined the Crimson Fleet while wearing my ranger outfit. No one thought that was worth noting for any reason.
I'm playing in systems governed by the Freestar Collective known to have rangers stationed in nearly every planet. No one has recognized me as a Ranger nor do I have any dialogue choice to say so.
Also the uniforms only matter in certain questlines when they need it to matter to blend in. Wearing the Ranger uniform in UC home territory doesn't trigger hostility.
