So I immediately turned around and boosted away till I was about 3-5km away from the pirate ships. From there, I let my wingmen do most the work as I sniped from a distance. Eventually some pirate ships made it to me but by then the UC carrier showed up with the rest of the fleet to clean up. About to board the Key so hopefully this part of the mission will be more enjoyable (I'm definitely siding with the pirates in my next playthrough though; much more fun and way more benefits than siding with the UC so far).
1. If you managed to give enough evidence to the LT. Toft you should have more UC ships show up to help you.
2. Spare/help/pay NPCs during the questline, they will later show up to help you if you choose to side with crimson fleet.
This helped me, hope it helps you too.
I don't like ship combat so hadn't done ANY modifications to my first and only ship except to add those two modules you HAVE to add for the quest thread. I'd prefer to not have to put experience points into ship stuff.
