can u elaborate on this for me? im no exactly the best pc guy but ik the difference and i have mine on an ssd but its not an nvme or atleast i dont think it is..
edit:ive also read people stuttering with nvme ssds although unsure what that is
The performance of even hybrid, high-spindle speed HDD's is not good enough to support Starfield, according to Bethesda. Apparently, this is also problem for some other games that require 100GB or more of storage for full installation and is expected to become common.
As for stuttering on your SSD or others' NVMe-SSD, I have heard it is happening and others are reporting it here on Steam, but there does not appear to be any response from Bethesda yet; at least not that I have been able to find. Hopefully there will be a patch or troubleshooting suggestions.
Do you think I should hold out on buying an nvme ssd? refund? or just wait? you seem to know what your saying so id like your honest opinions around that. because my system is indeed well within spec.
An NVMe SSD is not necessary, just any reliable SSD will do. Since you already have an SSD, then I assume the stuttering is not related to the drive. Some suggestions have come out in the forums to update Windows and update GPU drivers.
Personally, I am currently running Starfield with an RTX-2060 at 1080p and Medium settings. I -was- getting choppy movement, seeing an inconsistent 10 to 30 FPS in the cities, at Low settings. I installed a DLSS mod from Nexus to enable NVidia's upscaling solution, so I am no longer stuck with AMD's FSR2 upscaling (currently the only option in unmodded Starfield) and my city framerate is consistently over 40 frames, with no stutter or lag. There is also a XeSS mod for users who have Intel ARC.
As for refunding, I really can't suggest either way, it's not my place to tell anyone that their purchase was good or bad.
sounds like im screwed then, everythings up to date. f

i appreciate your help man but i refunded for now. ty for trying to help. gave u a small award.
edit: and I do have an AMD gpu. it was actually advertised for the game, and everything else is in spec. I'll repurchase if I see fixes. Im bummed.
Thank you very much and I do appreciate the sentiment. Hopefully Bethesda gets this optimized and squishes enough bugs for you and other players that have been suffering to come back and have fun.
With vSync the FPS is capped at 60 as it should, but when I walk around it randomly jumps between 45-60. With vSync off, it fluctuates between 130 and 85 but with no micro-stutter at all.
If vSync worked normally I should have seen constant 60 FPS like all other games I play.
well im glad someone got theirs working, albeit even if it isnt me. Running into a new issue now. Installing A nvme ssd and im forced to boot to bios no matter what, even if i change the boot order. it recognizes the new drive but i just cant get past bios.
So, I have been having the same issue. I can actually run the game on max settings smoothly until, 1) The breakthrough scene in the opening quest - As soon as Lin starts talking it hangs, I lose sound, then smooths right out. 2) The first pirate interaction after meeting Barrett. 3) And then randomly thereafter for no apparent reason. I did see where someone mentioned the SSD drive. Only to find out that all my Steam files are on the HDD, GRRR. Currently moving the game to my SSD to see if that fixes it.
If anyone knows anything else to try (in case the SSD move doesn't fix it) please hit me up. I'll probably keep playing, it's just super annoying.
Take Care!
::Update:: So, after some digging into my system I find that it wasn't built to the specifications I asked for. 8GB, not 16GB RAM. I got another 8GB and installed it last night. All settings to low I ran at 52.7 FPS from start to finishing the pirates (and some side ore mining). My GPU is a 4 y/o RX 580. Ryzen 5 3600. So I can only imagine what I could do with a better GPU. No more hangs, freezes, or crashes (yet).
vSync works normally in The Well - New Atlantis. I've witnessed meaningless FPS drops in space, where there is almost nothing to render. Every region has different issues in this game. It's just straight up unoptimized. Waiting on a patch from Bethesda.
Just get a good ole SSD, they are pretty cheap nowadays.
My system specs:
5800X3D cooled by the ASUS Ryujin II 360
ASUS TUF 3090 OC (Power limit increased to 107 via Afterburner)
32GB (2x16GB) memory running at 3600Mhz CL14 with 7.778ns First Word Latency
OS installed on a 980 Pro NVME
Game Library installed on 4TB Crucial NVME (the fastest model of the two).
and i get stutters, judders, freezes, and horrific FPS and Frametimes on either 3840x2160 or 1440p regardless which graphics settings i use.
My GPU is actually being pegged at 99% when playing at 3840x2160, and the ONLY way i was able to stop that from happening, was to lower resolution to 1440p, but there are times it even hits 100% usage and it just locks up for that one or two seconds it hits 100%,
So the game is very clearly massively in dire need of optimization.
