EDIT: Sorry didn't understand the question. I don't think so currently, but a Mod will 100% fix this.
showinventory [ID COMPANION]
removeitem [Companion's default clothing id]
Something expected from Bethesda. Will get fixed at Launch, most likely.
How can this possibly be a thing? Why would they refuse to wear armor in combat? It's truly absurd.
This isn't something that should have required a mod. It literally doesn't make any sense and it's impossible that play tests didn't have people saying "Why is my companion in street clothes in combat?"
If it's a bug that's a very odd bug but if it's a choice it's incomprehensible.
Do you have an actual example? The inventory shows multiple numbers...are the numbers the ID? Or do we type out the entire line? What would an actual line look like for sarah in this example?
With these console commands syntax is everything. So if we don't know the proper syntax for the commands, we can't use them.
You open the console. Left-click on your companion, after which his id will appear in the center of the screen.
Next, enter the command showinventory. Once you have a list of items, next to each of them there will be an id.
Next, enter the command to removeitem and the id of this item
For example
(~)
Left-click on NPC
showinventory ( without id ;) )
removeitem 001823cc
Also, in order for a companion to wear a spacesuit, his headdress must also be removed.
You can also go a simpler way by entering the command openactorcontainer 1 on the NPC (Doesn't always work)
If when you left-click on an NPC the wrong id is shown, then use the Scroll wheel
If you need achievements, then download a mod from nexusmods, which will allow you to work with the console and receive them

It just works.
Thank you for doing this! It worked. I did not understand at first because nothing appeared to change. But your mod doesn't actually force her to wear anything...it just exposes her outfit in her inventory, which is normally hidden. So now we can "unequip" her default clothes like any other clothes.
THANK YOU SO MUCH.
This is EXACTLY what we need. Thank you a million bro
Typical Bethesda rushing games for release with zero concern for quality.
I had my reservations, now its just ridiculous how fkn bad Bethesda is at playtesting their own games.
I mean, come the fck on Todd, you got lady running in leather jacket and skinny jeans on frozen planet surface, smth wrong in your head?
