Are holstered weapons suppose to show on character?

At the beginning of the game when you initially fight the pirates, I holstered my weapon and it showed on my character. I can't get it to do that now. Am I going crazy? I swear the 9 hells and back that it was there before.

It doesn't show in cities/towns, that's the only place I've known it not to show up.

The cutter does, but my pistol never did.

For me, only rifle type weapons show on the back with the pack, remove the pack and they dont even show. Sucks, but guess placement for handguns would have to be done for all spacesuits and all clothing lines when not in suit.

Wait... Hold up! Wait a minute! There is a key to holster your weapon? I must have missed it in the keybinding. I've just been strolling around with my weapon looking like a goof.

Same as every other bethesda game, hold R.

I never tested without a pack as I can't even imagine not using my boost jump.
