Fix for High GPU Usage?
Is there any solution for the maxed out GPU usage yet? As soon as I start playing, the YouTube video I play on my other monitor drops to potato quality as soon as I load my save. And if I am watching a friend stream on Discord, the stream freezes until I open a menu or go indoors.

Even on the absolute lowest settings, my GPU usage is at max. I'm okay with less FPS if it means my GPU usage isn't at max 24/7. I need some GPU power leftover for other applications.

I've got an RTX3080 10GB and i9-11900k running at 4.8GHz~. Latest drivers. Doesn't matter if I run the game at the lowest settings with FSR on/off. GPU usage remains high.

Capping the framerate to 60 also doesn't help since if it drops below 60 (Which it does in some areas) the GPU usage spikes.

I understand we're likely going to have to wait for some patches or new drivers, but I figured I'd ask around.

GPU running @100% is normally a good thing means it's not being bottleknecked by your CPU is but i think NVIDIA has a FPS limiter now in their drivers you could try to lock your FPS lower or you could also try running at a lower resolution.

I understand that high GPU usage is not inherently an issue. I would like to limit GPU usage because it directly interferes with other applications that require my GPU as well.

I already said in my post that I capped FPS. Changing resolution does not change anything either, otherwise FSR being on would curtail GPU usage. FSR runs the game at a lower resolution and then upscales it.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Watching a friend stream on Discord and/or Microsoft Edge with a YouTube video playing.

But you're not being serious so you get a pass.

Just play the damn game and watch your ♥♥♥♥ elsewhere. Not that hard. Game uses 100% of my 4090....good thing and I don't have these issues. How in the hell do you even know it is because of that. Never once have I had an issue with a game using my full gpu causing other ♥♥♥♥ to lag. Sounds like a ram thing to me or just a poorly configured pc.

need to cap it lower than 60 try 40 or lower looking at some vids on youtbe
11 minuets in he tests the 3080 12gb version.

I've already looked at that exact video. Game doesn't run great on very many GPUs.

I've capped it as low as 30, but why would I play the game at 30fps? I'd just play on console at that point.

I am asking if there is a way to limit the GPU usage for Starfield so that other applications don't have issues. This isn't a solution.
If you have a nvidia gpu, it would not affect youtube at all. And 100% gpu usage is what you want. Cpu usage however, you want less than 90% as cpu controls what is being sent to the gpu. Nvenc cores for youtube, cuda cores for the game. I play games and have plex/youtube running in the background all the time, no issues.

If you need spare performance for other programs, i suggest you get a second gpu.

Lower the render resolution in the settings if it's at 100 drop it to 75 if its at 75 drop it to 50.

I play at 60fps 1440p on a 3070ti, yeah it needs some help no doubt.
I max my GPU utilization at about 98-99% causing some GPU bottlenecking

Dropping it to 75 reduced it to 96-90 GPU Util (right around 1080p Dynamic Res Scaling)

Dropping it to 50 puts you at a consistent 80 GPU Utilization (720p Dynamic Res Scaling)

Also you can download the DLSS mod and squeeze a couple extra frames (some say they noticed no difference probably 4xxx series) but I did

If you wanna shell out the extra cash and pay $5 on the mod dev's patreon he has beta version of DLSS with Frame Generation for the 4xxx series of cards.

If you are on the 3xxx series nvidia the free version might be more suited to you, I noticed on the paid version even though I can't take advantage of the Frame Generations I can use Nvidia Reflex to lower input latency which dropped considerably. So there's that.

Turn off any un-needed settings (post processing effects) and def hit the shadows because they take quite a bit of performance away.

These are a few things I've tried to do to optimize performance. It's not great but hopefully with some updates things get better.

I just wish the NPC's didn't stare at me like they were on crack... but one thing at a time.

Some of you are only reading the title of the post and not the post itself...

You have no idea what you're talking about. I'm running a Ryzen 7 7700X, 4070ti, 32gb of CL6000 DDR5, nvme m.2 and it's lagging out/stopping a single twitch stream/youtube video on my side monitor. If my brand new hardware is the problem, then that's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

They are being serious. you are doing stuff that requires GPU resources while gaming. this is a bad idea.

open the nvidia control panel and make sure the nvidia video super resolution isn't running at the same time, i think it defaults to one or two with the new driver update and it uses your GPU to AI upscale any video playing software on your screen to your monitors native resolution. it uses a lot of video memory.

lmao.

High gpu usage isn't an issue. In fact you want to see it.
DmAnd Sep 3, 2023 @ 4:51pm
You will have to cap the FPS at 30
