If you slow down to below about 25 and approach to within a couple of hundred meters you should see a "dock" prompt appear on your ship HUD. Hold down the key and you should automatically dock.
roll is useless. everything about trying to pilot the ship is useless.
Oh, yeah I think you have to have the ship or station that you want to dock with targeted.
photo mode X
exit scanner F
If you don't see dock, hit esc to untarget whatever you have targeted and hit E again
That worked for me
the pilot skill that unlocks boosters will give you the ability to strafe
"Fly to a point a few kilometers out in front of the station. Align your ship with the mail slot and steadily roll on-axis to vaguely match the station's rotation. Or not... you do you, Boo.
Wait for traffic to clear... or not.
[Optional: Select, "Flight of the Valkyries" on your status & peripherals console and play it full blast to drown out the station docking muzak.]
Fly thru the slot without smashing into the station hull.
[Optional: Boost thru the slot, flip immediately, and apply full thrust to avoid smashing into the back wall of the docking bay. For a spicy show, force a Beluga or Type-9 to "accidentally" crack the hull of your Suici-winder and enjoy the fireworks as you pass-out from lack of O2.]
Find your assigned landing pad and plant your landing feetsies like a horny dragonfly onto a reed.
[Optional: To make things exciting, arm and fire all weapons before touchdown.]"
