No, optane is not as good as an SSD. It's 2023, you can get a 1TB SSD for like $40. Throw your ancient hard drive in the trash where it belongs.

::GROAN:: I don't want to open my computer again, but I fear you are correct.

I'm running a 32gb optane and a 2080. I'm getting smooth frames and running it at 4k.

Disk read/write speeds will not change your FPS, it will however cause way longer loading screens and the game may momentarily pause or hitch to load more data into memory.

You can get an optane with enough onboard storage to install starfield in which case it will be no different than an SSD

Optane ... didn't Intel discontinue it, incl. support?

Optane is good but it isn't going to make a huge difference from gaming. Outside of launching fast the first time after a OS reboot. I have two 960GB drives in my server and a few 58/118GB drives for various purposes. I'm not doing RAID off it because of the cost/GB but it doesn't matter if you are running a Kubernetes cluster off multiple drives and even machines.

BTW I also have (4) 2TB 970 evo drives in that machine.

In what year was that true? Predicted pre load have been utilized for quite a while.
Slow HDD speeds can indeed drop frames or texture quality if its adaptive.

This is old tec, but expect to se much more of it now that the only place a HDD is used is on PC.

A lot of people have been buying on firesale. It is still not the best GB/$ but there are specific usages that can't be matched by normal NAND based drives. Even the "cheaper" 905p drives.
