Stealthing?
So, I feel like I am doing something wrong, but so far I have been able to sneak attack zero people in >5 hours of play.

Sneaking, with the required slow walk speed (capslock), makes you so slow that you can't physically keep up with an NPC walking to perform a "backstab".

Moving at default move rate makes them instantly spot you if your closer than 30 feet or so.

Not to mention, every mission I have done so far has such a high concentration of hostile NPCs, and a complete lack of alternate routes to approach from behind, that at least one of them will *always* be looking in your direction, which makes them spot you from 100+ feet away, even crouched, and alerts everyone.

I feel like I am missing some critical portion of how stealth works in CE2 and Starfield, but I have thousands of hours in Elder Scrolls games and I have never struggled this much.

Is it intended that you simply *don't ever* melee sneak attack?

Is there a lightswitch toggle somewhere or something that I need to turn off in order to creep on people?

If you stealth are you required to ditch your companion entirely? Do they just instantly get spotted and that is the problem?

I feel like the implementation couldn't possibly be this bad and I clearly have to have missed something and the struggling must be wholly based on me being oblivious to how it works, because as is, I struggle to see how this could possibly make it past anyone playingtesting it ever.

Stealth seemed an afterthought from what I saw rather than a valid playstyle, especially with the bumbling NPCs you are forced to bring with you on story missions.

A video from a player with a sniper rifle, late game gear, and maxed stealth skill tree in a very open map does not really make a case for stealthing.

I can do that too if I console myself a god character.

I want to see them start a new character, equip an axe, and kill people reliably without bringing everything down on their heads and being forced to fight "loud".

Hey man, I went searching because I felt like I was doing something wrong in regards to stealth. It seems like you are just instantly spotted, there's not rhyme or reason. It goes instantly from being hidden to detected. I'm so confused as how you're supposed to stealth properly, is it only with maxed out stealth?

I even found a chameleon helmet that 100% stealths me, and not moving at all I still get spotted. Stealth feels like it doesn't work at all.

So don't use an axe? Just make a silencer on a pistol or a rifle, set it to semi auto and there ya go.

Then Bethesda needs to remove the 4x melee stealth multiplier because that's entirely pointless. What a stupid comment. The man wants to use melee, he should be allowed to use melee. The stealth in this game is absolute trash, they somehow made it worse then their previous games.

Stealth melee at the start was never easy, nor should it have been. That being said, some of the earlier mercs are stupidly armored. Ecliptic for instance has like 140+ damage resistance to physical. You have to hit them in their weakspots, which well, they don't have any, damage sponges. You don't have unarmored ghouls/raiders here. It's like every human enemy is in power armor.

You are supposed to crouch like in all other Bethesda games, not walk.

I haven't managed to sneak attack anyone yet, but it might be easier when I get more perks.

Bad stealth is one of the reasons why I refunded :steamhappy:
Seems like Stealth skill is a must for who wants to sneaking around. Without it, crouching doesn't even work if you try to be a ghost.

...you really don't understand that I was already stealthed? Slow walk just makes you even harder spot when your already sneaking ("hear" technically).

Also, why would you need "more perks" just to stab someone in the back like it's some kind of reward.

Every other Beth CE game you could pull off melee stealth just fine from the get go, it was slow to start but not basically impossible like it is now.

The stealth system is a joke compared to Skyrim and Fallout, rank one stealth does literally nothing. You can take one step and the entire room will hear you and attack, almost like no thought went into stealth mechanics, so it really ruins any kind of stealth playthrough/build, kind of disappointing.

Bethesda could remedy it by tweaking stealth settings or making rank one stealth stronger, or even just making the enemies less aware so stealth is actually viable at rank one.

Stealth in this is a joke. I picked the wrong background

I was disappointed because I picked Ronin background and wanted to try a melee build, but it seems completely unviable, at least from a stealth perspective. You can do a melee build, but it isn't as fun knowing stealth doesn't even work. It's like the game pushes the player to do a simple generic gun build, like picking Soldier or Bounty Hunter background and just using guns and laser weapons.
