Thats pretty much where I'm at because this lockpicking system is either completely broken, or totally unexplained. It makes no sense, and its completely ruining the game for me.
Just click on another slot (on the right) and see if the key fits that one.
Basically, It actually requires a few brain cells..lol
Generally on the outer ring there are a couple that look like they should fit but then picking the wrong one of those blocks out the "correct" pick (pun not intended). At each layer I do not insert keys until I have solved that layer "mentally" blocking out the slots I've selected a key for. Using this approach with each ring to be picked takes more time than say Skyrim lock picking for example but so far has felt more like an actual puzzle solving approach.
TLDR, don't slap in the first key that looks as though it fits, try a few different ones visually/in your head before committing a key.
You match the shapes, you have very limited choices, but I've noticed that sometimes you get an impossible one, atleast it has happened to me, IE I get one where there is only a single slot, but all the keys I have got more so none of my options work, I have to back out and redo it effectively wasting a lockpick.
