Consistent crashes caused by nvidia display driver
I was barely able to get past the into mine sequence, before character creation - until I locked FPS to 60 system wide via nvidia control panel.

Fast forward an hour+ and now im back to consistent crashes. Event viewer is listing an error regarding "nvlddmkm" failing to respond. Display driver stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

I'm on the starfield game ready 537.13 drivers - used DDU for a clean install of GPU drivers.

Figured I'd start this thread for hopefully more refined tracking of what is causing crashes for nvidia GPU users.

Similar problem. Game hard freezes PC.

Event viewer shows "nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted."

fresh driver install

I got zero crashes on the tutorial planet but as soon as I went to New Atlantis I was getting crashes every five minutes or so. I tried everything people mentioned, turning off super sampling, limiting FPS, nothing worked. Turns out my RAM OC was partly to blame. My DDR5 was set to 7400 CL36 and was stable for most games but caused a lot of crashing in this game. Running memtest86 I had a single error in test number 8 so I backed the RAM down to 7200 CL36, verified it passed memtest86, and played for a couple hours today with only a single crash. While I still got a crash, it at least didn't happen after five minutes of play.

Running all settings maxed at 4K, turned off motion blur and film grain as well as AMD super sampling so running at full 4K. i9 13900KS and 4090 with 32 GB DDR5.

Interesting to hear about the ram OC - I am running a standard XMP profile on my setup, however I dn't have any issues in any other games.

What ended up working for me - downclocking my stock 2080ti founders edition. Yup you heard right. I had to reduce memory and core clock speeds by 100Mhz to stop the display driver from crashing in this game.

I'm able to get a couple hours of gametime with zero crashes now.

Running an AMD 7900XTX and it gives the same error (but with an AMD driver message of course)

Running 4080 with latest drivers on a clean driver install. Zero issues in 28 or more hours.
