High pitch sound in the scanner.
Played starfield for a few hours and you guys tell me if the sound of the scanner makes you nauseous. Its so high pitch like a dog whistle. I turned it of now but that just means I miss a lot of other sounds eswell. Let me know what you guys think.

I got it solved without a 3rd party software by setting my sound options to this:

I noticed my audio device setting was set to 24 bit 48000 Hz. Just lowering the setting to 44000 Hz eliminated the "dog-whistle"!

Think I'll just leave it there, as I fear I maybe loosing to much quality if I set it to 16 bit 32000 Hz...?

Also for those of you who'd rather use a mod, there is this one. It basically the same sounds, only with some EQ tweaking to help with ear discomfort:

Yeah. Anyone else feel that pain in your jaw? Like, at the hinge of your jaw? Every time I use the scanner, gddamn.

Yup, kind of in that area. Look up "Hyperacusis", which is basically sensitivity to certain frequencies and often accompanied by stabbing ear pain/discomfort/sense of fatigue.

Check to see if your audio device is set to 48000 Hz. Changing it to 44000 Hz seems to make the whole game easier on my ears. Also would try out the other suggestions in this thread, including the mod I linked to in my previous comment.

The ineptitude of BGS just keeps inflating... I don't hold out much hope for ES6, and tbo by the time it drops I'll have 'grown' out of gaming anyways.

I've done some additional experimenting with this and made a video I would like to share.
On the far-right in the EQ you can clearly see the knives that are stabbing your ear every single time you open up that scanner, or menus(please be cautious when listening to this if your ears are very sensitive. YouTube compression negates some of the harshness, bit it still might hurt for you to listen):
https://youtu.be/1kOf5Dpfh44

You can clearly see spikes around 11,5kHz, 16kHz(like logis has pointed out in this thread), 19,5kHz and a smaller at around 21,2kHz.
The spike at 16kHz is a whooping 30 dB louder than everything else at some points!!

This was recorded with 24 bit 48000 Hz format. So if you're like me and had 48000 Hz as your default, do yourself a favor and set it to 44100 Hz, or even lower like BrokenCloud mentioned above. This eliminates most of the spikes.
However the 16kHz spike does persists through the lower formats, so the only thing you can do for now is lowering audio device format and take up logi's advice with the Equalizer APO(or use EQ in Voicemeeter if that's your setup) - or - downloade the "More Subtle Scanner Sounds" mod from Nexus
OR
Wait for bethesda to fix it......

Great work. Thanks for diving more deep into this.

I planned to do it a bit later on with my Ableton 11 but thanks to your video I can save that time.

Man 30dB loud high frequenzy noise would be enough to kill my guitar amp without a noise gate...

Thanks!
There are just so many sounds in the game with this issue, and the mods so far only covers some of them, so I'm now playing the rest of the game with audio running through Ableton. Got Fabfilter Pro Q2 on there, which is such a great EQ. Voicemeeter EQ isn't surgical enough.
So far I've gotten away with using only 3 nothces. Here are the EQ settings for those interested:
24 dB/oct notch @ 13181 Hz, 19 Q
36 dB/oct notch @ 15171 Hz, 22 Q
36 dB/oct notch @ 15804 Hz, 20 Q

I came in here to complain about the PAIN the noise is causing me constantly whenever I turn my sound up, see someone has posted a solution. Going to give it a try, thanks.

Also what sicko put this into the game?

I have installed this program and I have no idea how to use it... gonna have to look up some tutorials.

ok figured it out, just went over to 16k and CRUSHED it down. So much better now, ty so much. Testing it out I was so hesitant to put the headphones over my ears lol.

Glad to hear you got it to work! I would still be cautious either way. This game is riddled with this problem, and unfortunately not just on the frequencies mentioned(though mostly it seems).
Unfortunately for me these fixes hasn't been enough, for me at least, so I've stopped playing the game...

I know right?? I honestly wonder if "normal" people's ears might be acting funny after playing this for hours on end. Unfortunately though if they notice their ears ringing/hissing, chances are they wont attribute it to playing this game...

There is mod for it, look for "scanner sound" on nexus.
