The short of it is that the combination analogue and mouse controls work as long as there is a continuous, uninterrupted keyboard input happening at the same time. The moment the keyboard input pauses or stops, the game switches to controller mode and unfocuses the mouse from the application (why? Who knows but it's bizarre.)
So all you have to do, assuming you have some method of creating a hardware macro like most gaming keyboards and mice have, is to set a toggleable held macro to use a key that the game doesn't touch. In my case, I chose 'u'. This was arbitrary, it could have been any keyboard key. Once this is done, you turn on that macro, and the analogue stick functions for movement, while your mouse uninterrupted can move as normal.
