Will Steam recognize an install from the Xbox app?
Since we can't preload Starfield yet on Steam, would the Xbox version of the game work? I had preloaded it on Xbox before buying it on Steam and I'm wondering if I could just use that version to save myself having to reinstall another 100+gb

I don't think so. Only if you redeemed from the Microsoft store not Steam

That sucks. I guess I will just reinstall. It sucks Bethesda are likely going to make us wait until the last minute to preload, my internet isn't that great.

Theoretically, you can copy the files into the Steam commons folder. Then you have to create the .acf manifest file manually. Then check the files for errors, Steam will reload some files.

No. It will not work this way. While the xbox is a mini PC and Windows, it's still not a gaming PC. You can't just drop the files into steam and verify them this way. None of the CRC & file size checks will match the steam version, and it would re download every single file.

When they compile a game for each platform, the compiler compiles all the code into exes dlls, etc and also packs the data files for the game. This will cause file sizes and compression CRCs to be different on each platform.

If it's a gamepass game on windows, then it MIGHT be possible, but not likely as Windows Store apps are often put in places you don't have permissions to go. Also, they are often encrypted. In the end, steam would probably re download the whole game.

Best to just reinstall. Save yourself all sorts of possible headaches at launch.

It depends on how MS packages the program. In some cases it's just a standard install. For others, they put it in as a Windows App and it literally doesn't have a standard executable.

This is part of why grabbing games on game pass can lead to them being unmoddable with the normal mods.

Most games on the Xbox App are encypted/protected. This prevents moving files or any type of editing.

BGS's previous games on the Xbox app allow modding as long as the mods don't rely on the script extender or anything that modifies the executable. Starfield's pre-install files through the Xbox app are encrypted though right now, all of them. There will also be some Steam specific files in the Steam download anyway.

That's interesting to know, Thanks for the info. I guess it makes sense that they don't run with the script extender as the Xbox App will only run games directly from the main exe.

Cheers!

Preload is August 30 for Steam.

Xbox App uses UWP, which prevents the idea.
