Yep unless you have thrusters of some sort.
I hate the movie Gravity for it's failure to adhere to the laws of physics.
But yeah, "kiting" has always been present in the majority of non-turn based combat models. It's usually a matter of whether or not your enemies have mobility or tackle related abilities designed to close distance or debuff you to reduce the ability of the player to use kiting.
That being said, there are plenty of games out there where there's a limit to how much advantage you can get from just kiting, though it does tend to be reasonably effective in most open-world games.
