CPU upgrade or should I be ok?
I see people saying this game will be CPU heavy. I've upgraded to a 4080 GPU recently, but I still have my Ryzen 9 3900x, which according to some benchmark website should be better than the one listed in the recommended specs so I assumed it wouldn't be an issue.

What do you think? I have 64 gb of ram and a 1440p monitor, by the way.

You'll likely be perfectly fine.

You're most likely fine.

If the game comes around and you realize your CPU is a bottle neck with this iteration of the Creation Engine you can always just drop in a 5800X3D for a relatively cheap and easy boost without needing to get a new board/CPU and potentially RAM.

Yeah, if I want to go for the newer CPUs that would mean also upgrading the motherboard and RAM and I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that for a while.

a 5800x3d would be a better match for gaming and you wouldn't need a new mobo like said above. Just do a bios update before hand and pop in the 5800x3D with a good cooler.

This. If your CPU exceeds the recommended spec, then having it paired with a RTX 4080 will provide good performance for you. Esp. at 1440p.

I do also use it quite a bit for video editing and recording too, which I understand may be a bit different matter?

This is what I was hoping. Hope you're right!

I have a 5800X3D too and have no issues recording, Editing or even running Unreal engine 5 Editor.

The 5800X3D has the same TDP (105W) as OPs current 3900X, unless his current CPU is already cooking a new cooler shouldn't be necessary.

You'll be fine even with the 3900X .. Make sure to have 32 to 64 Gig of RAM

He will likely be ok, but the 5800x3d runs very hot if you just leave it at default settings in the bios. Undervolting is definitely a must imo or depending on the motherboard it may have other options that do the same / similar thing like kombo strike.. Or you can use software to do the same thing. I guarantee if you leave the 5800x3d at default settings and not touch anything in the bios it will run much hotter than the 3900x.

I upgraded from a 3700X to the 5800X3D about a month ago to raise my fps for my first 1440p 21:9 ultrawide (165hz OLED). I have to say the upgrade is more noticable than I was expecting. So far I've noticed 20%* performance uplift in some games alongside more consistent frame times.

I play games from pretty much every genre, but with about 3000 hours in competitive games I've come to really appreciate high FPS, to the point I will turn down settings even in story based fps/rpg games to get 90+ FPS. This is where my recommendation comes in:

If you enjoy the fluidity of 85+ fps in your games (inc AAA which are often very demanding these days) then I would recommend this uppgrade or splurging a bit more for a 7700X (which will give you equivalent performace to the 5800X3D at a lower price *CPU ONLY). I would expect the 7700X to be easier to sell in a few years if you're the person who sells their old gear when they upgrade.

If you just want to play at 60fps and don't mind a bit of upscaling or high settings over ultra then your 3900X will be more than enough.

Excuse me for the wall of text. I hope it was at least somewhat helpful.

Edit: I forgot to reiterate that JRM above was spot on with mentioning the 5800X3D will run hot. I have Noctua's NH-D15 cooler (1 fan instead of 2 installed) on that bad boy and I can still hit 80+ C on stock settings in game. I don't think I could hit ~75+ C on my 3700X even maxed out. A small undervolt / fan curve bump should be able to tame the beast though.

That is good to hear man glad it all worked out. Yeah I worked at businesses in the tech field hands on so I knew what to expect on the 5800x3d heat issue.

Post some results of your pc in starfield.

Here is my results. You will see mine scores in the upper percentile vs other pc's with the same hardware.

Game runs good overall for me.

The performance depends on many factors, The CPU, GPU, Ram / ram speed, SSD - the game runs best on a nvme.

Here is what a Well Balanced and Tweaked PC can Run Starfield at 1440P ULTRA

Amd 5800X3D undervolted (not overclocked) so that it stays in full max boost 99% of the time.
6900XT overclocked to 6950XT performance
32GB DDR4 3400 MHZ ram
7000+MBPS nvme drive

This is with the latest driver 23.9.1

Thanks - very interesting to see a well tuned system scores
I thought I was going to be screwed with 16 GB, but it runs fine for the most part. During conversations and combat it stutters a little bit, but very playable.
