United Colonies or Freestar Collective?
What are you more partial to?

Based on the little we know so far I think I’m leaning more to the United Colonies. As man ventures to the stars our dependence on each other will become more important to progress and so I’m not sure if the frontiers of an interstellar civilization is the place for the ‘rugged individualism’ of the Freestar Collective. As I recall the Freestar Collective areas looked a bit more rough and tumble than the United Colonies locales.

I'll see who the "good guys" are, if there are any, and it's not another game full of various flavors of bad guys where you pick the one you're least sickened by.

Here are the confirmed factions/groups that i know about.

- Space Truckers

- United Colonies

- Freestar

- (some kind of underworld gang to do with that water world drug)

- Ecliptic Mercenaries

- a Snake group (i forget what they are called)

- Earth Preservation Society

- Crimson Fleet

Have to guess there is some epic mining rivalries going on and more so alot more to find out.

Wait there’s really a group of space truckers? I heard about it but I thought people made that up. What’s the source?

Nice.😁

I bet mods will bring in various sci-fi IPs. With 1,000 planets and highly customizable ship construction it could be turned into a space-sci-fi theme park. Star Wars Land, Alien Land, Etc.😛

There have got to be corporations that havnt been revealed.

Also to the other comment about a 3rd faction, the Crimson Fleet is as strong as Freestar or United Colonies, it looks like so far anyway.

Oh and in the reply above i missed the "Vanguard something or other", which is a separate part of United Colonies. Lots of different groups, who knows whats going on.

I assumed they would be more like criminals hiding in the wilderness of space. So they are a full faction on par with UC and FSC? Are there open CF cities?

I don't think there is a faction like that unless there is a hidden 3rd faction.

He´s making a joke, it´s the company from the Alien vs. Predator IP

Yes Wayland Yutani is in AvP and also the company is present to some degree or other in most, if not all, of the rest of Alien movies and also games.

Yah I think I agree. I like playing the good guy. It just feels natural to me and I have trouble playing some kind of psycho even when I try. I’ve started more than one play throughs of RDR2 that I intended to play a low honor Arthur but it doesn’t usually last too long before I reform to a high honor Arthur.😛

Is there any kind of morality system or morality aspect to Starfield? Or is it more about your standing with various factions? If it’s the latter then I really hope the morality of various factions tend to be unambiguous. Also it would probably make it easier to stick to a more evil character if the main point is you are focusing on serving an evil faction rather than constantly making moral choices on your deeds (like sparing an NPC vs murdering them in cold blood which comets up several times in RDR2)..

One thing I think would be hard to reconcile though, story-wise, is an evil character caring about “what’s out there” as it seems they would be more interested in “what’s in my bank account”. So I don’t see how an evil character fits into Constellation. Maybe they are interested in profits from discovery? I dunno.

Exactly my problem too! This time hopefully I can commit to character and not reform. The Serpent embraces us all. If anything United Colonies seems like the better of the two choices since the alternative is too space cowboy from the limited information.

What side will let me Deathstar a planet? Just let me blow something up from space. Space Megaton is ruining my view!

I'm thinking either the serpent religion or the crimson fleet. I will probably do more than one play-through so I can do UC or cowboys after I have fun being a pirate.

Yeah, Bethesda is terrible at morality/karma systems. They try to use a black and white system, which always feels arbitrary and nonsensical.
You murder a murderer and get treated like a villain, despite saving countless lives.
You help someone who's a bad person, which also ends up helping a lot of others, and you're a bad guy.

The straight "good vs bad" thing just doesn't work. It also lacks all nuance. If you help a faction build up their fleet so they can better guard their territory, you're a good guy. But what if you're doing it because your hideout is in their territory and you're just making it harder for others to come after you?
What if you're giving people stuff, not to be altruistic, but simply to butter them up for info or to make it easier to steal from them? Make them like you enough to open their doors to you, then steal everything not nailed down.

There's a game coming out (hopefully) this year called Broken Roads.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1403440/Broken_Roads/
It's an RPG set in post-apocalyptic Australia.

Instead of the standard "good vs evil" morality system, they use their Moral Compass system.
Your actions fall each fall under one of four sections: Utilitarian, Humanitarian, Nihilist and Machiavellian.
So you might sacrifice lives for the greater good, making you more Utilitarian. You're not "evil". But you're prioritising the needs of the many over the needs of the few. You're looking at the big picture. Sure, these sick folks will die, but their deaths guarantee the longevity of the read of the town.
Or maybe you're a nihilist, and you think that the faith of a town is pointless mind control, so you take out the clergy. Yes, you've killed people, but you've set the town folk free from the brainwashing of the church.

That makes for a vastly more realistic morality system. Once based on actual choices and outcomes and INTENT. Not just "did you kick the puppy? Y/N?"

As I saw on one message board "welcome to the winning side of progressiveness vs conservatism."

UC is gonna be some awful police state while Freestar is gonna be a lawless hellhole.
