Starfield was an all access game that Microsoft panic-bought and then restricted.
Remember, Starfield is a totally new IP. Also, Bethesda wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for their very long relationship with Microsoft which pre-dates the Elder Scrolls games being on a Sony platform.
It was originally flaunted on all consoles when it was first announced, Until Microsoft panic bought it thinking it was going to be ps5 exclusive.
I’m asking for the official announcement that it would be available on the PS5 which was retracted by Microsoft. You can’t really “flaunt” something if you’re not promoting it.
As far as I remember we didn’t know anything until the teaser trailer at the Xbox/Bethesda event, and by then Microsoft had already bought Zenimax, and it was clearly labelled for XBox, Gamepass and Steam.
No real mixed messages or promises there.
There was no official announcement.
However, in the FTC trial against Microsoft it was confirmed that Sony was in negotiations with Bethesda to make Starfield a PlayStation exclusive. Phil Spencer talked to the board at Microsoft and convinced them to buy Bethesda in response because they (Xbox) were losing out on too many games with all of Sony's third-party exclusivity deals.
There were also leaks before the purchase was announced where various gaming sites were saying that inside sources were talking about Starfield being a PlayStation exclusive.
There was nothing officially announced but after the FTC v Microsoft trial it is confirmed that it was well on its way to becoming an exclusive before Microsoft bought Zenimax.
Anyway, it might just be me, but I don't expect Housemarque's next game to come to Xbox or Steam on release - they're owned by Sony - and I'm not expecting PS5 owners to feel sorry for me either. I hope they get a great new game because that gives everyone else a much-needed kick up the hiney.
100% true and fair.
Likewise, I as an Xbox owner (with a decent gaming laptop but not a good one) know I can never expect games like God of War, Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima and if I ever wanted to play them I'd be told to buy a PlayStation.
Same principle applies.
Although I think the campaign to review bomb Starfield is both hilarious and pathetic, all because it won't be on PlayStation.
