I like the idea. Not sure how it would be implemented though....
I don´t know how the rest of you feels about it, but me personally, I´m not really liking the idea that the Constellation group seems to be like the Minutemen, in the sense that they are tied to the main story and they seem to be a blank faction that will roll with you no matter what you do with some nuances.
In Fallout 4 it took a lot for the Nuka World DLC to finally come out and give us a way to kill Preston and get villified by the minutemen. I hope they don´t do the same here and there´s an easier and faster way to ditch the group for roleplaying purposes.
Exactly, they have a track records of trying to shove certain plot points into the all the player created characters. Even if you make a boosmer that only picks flowers and uses animal commands to avoid combat with wild creatures, you have to make an ephor in avoiding falling into the main quest.
Same for the alternate start on Fallout games to become a ghoul, such a simple thing, but Bethesda doesn´t grasp that some people may want to play a ghoul.
I really wish Bethesda tutorials would stop being the prelude to the main story. Hell, come to think of it, I just don´t like most of their main stories. Would prefer if there was a bigger plot but you access it not by being forced to it, but it goes unvealing slowly as you progress trough certain key side quests or faction ranks.
ghouls are not excepted by certain factions and even lots of regular peoploe in the world.
if you take fallout 4 for example the player being a ghoul would mean no access to the brotherhood of steel and the institute since both do not accept ghouls.

That´s been my main issue with Bethesda games from an RPG perspective, they really don´t want to lock content out of the regular player so choices exist in game, but have little weight and generally only affect particular small isolated groups until the very end. And even then, not so much.
Now let´s look at upcoming Baldur´s Gate 3, where you can select several backgrounds that will activate a specific quest. Some of those archetypes can be selected for companions you can create. They unveiled an origin a few days ago, The Dark Surge, that you can only give to your character, and it will make your character have an uncontrollable desire to kill and dismember everything you find. And there´s a whole questline involved with giving in or resist that urge and figuring out who you were before it.
Obviously, it´s far too complex for a Bethesda game, which have a more sandbox approach. But, maybe just a little bit of RPG? I want to make narrative choices that have narrative impacts. Choosing as background "engineer" and getting "+5 in energy weapons" it´s should not even being consider an RPG feature.
Beth games are more geared to the 'casual' gamer, not the hardcore RPG folks. They are more action/adventure games with RPG elements than anything else. Their worlds are notorious for not caring what the player has done. Choices rarely have significant consequences, and very little changes, regardless of what the player does....
True, still I want to dream on about the day Todd is finally like "ok, let´s go back to more RPG roots". ANd for the question on this thread, I don´t think allowing players to avoid befriending the Constellation group on the first main quest before reaching any area with side quests, and creating their own faction with a basic logo design feature where you choose among several already rendered design, colors and details, would be that difficult.
Like I said think about Preston, no matter what, if you meet him and finish that quest where he goes to Sanctuary, you are instantly checked as a minutemen member and on the road to become their captain just for a few quests. And it takes going aaaaall the way down on the raider encampment quest of Nuka Cola DLC for him to finally question himself if giving the keys of his faction to the first person he saw that was not already in was a smart choice.
We should be able to tell Preston to go his own way and us in our own from the first time you meet him. Same for the Constellation on Starfield.
For me, it would be enough for my squad and my equipment to be called with a separate name chosen by the user, as indeed even in the army the battalions have their own names, and then I would really like that when I walk through the game, approaching one of my outposts on a distant planet or one of my spaceships, you can see the logo that I have chosen in a menu or better still that I have uploaded to a folder after creating it with photoshop. Again, following the example of the Army, battalions have their own unique crests.
I think in terms of development it would cost little effort, and it gives the player a lot of satisfaction. Egosoft have succeeded in this minor feature, but if Bethesda does not include it, so be it. I will still enjoy the game
