Play the game first, Space combat control wise maybe really simplistic we don't know yet. A control stick could be complete overkill in the end like with NMS

Buy the one gamepad
I've been playing on the PC with a gamepad for ages and recently bought the XBox Elite 2 controller and I'm sure that Starfield can be controlled very well with it.

Shame they didn't make a custom Starfield joystick.

For clarification, in my mind joystick =/= controller. For me joystick means a flight stick ie something that waggles while controller means an Xbox one controller.

But an Xbox gamepad with Starfield design.
Only a joystick would not control the game completely well anyway.

Gamepad? Do mean submersible control actuator device?

This is clear to me for in flight maybe also good but for the rest of the control rather bad to use.
With one controller you cover everything.

Why not allow multiple control options? Controller/Joystick for flight, KBM for on the ground.

A joystick might not even work well with Starfield as what are you going to do between ground and flight segments, pause the game to desync your controller to plug in your flight stick only to yank it out again when it comes time to land? Less of a problem with mouse and keyboard but the point stands.

If you are looking for a nice entry level type Flightstick, go for the Logitech Extreme 3d Pro for 34.99.

Or if you want a affordable HOTAS option try the T.Flight Hotas X from Thrustmaster for 69.99.

The Logitech one is extremely popular, solidly built.

....it has never worked that way. Mouse and Flightstick/Hotas can be functional at the same time.

Well can't help with a joystick I wouldn't even recommend getting one till after the game comes out there's no info if it'll even work if you want a gamepad which will 100% work look up the, GuliKit KingKong 2 Pro, that thing is awesome with the added benefit of never getting drift which is awesome.

I bought the XBox constellation controller and it works great over bluetooth. I do get disconnected from time to time but I could just plug it in as well. Sometimes games will pause when that happens. My PS4 wireless controllers also get disconnected from time to time but work great otherwise.

Most joysticks by themselves have far fewer controls. So with a joystick the problem becomes having a keyboard setup that let's you do all the other controls while holding the joystick. HOTAS is likely far to much for this game and isn't something you would use on the ground. Though you can use the PS and XBox controller on the ground.

For this game I would get the XBox controller as the prompts in game will likely be defaulted to that as this isn't releasing to PS4/PS5 right now. But if you have PS4/PS5 wireless controllers or even any other controller you can plug in through a cable it will likely work with steam though the XBox would be the easiest to use, setup and work with most games.
