I don't understand potions

sometimes I pick one up and it goes in my inventory, other times I just drink it straight away. I don't understand why, because sometimes my item inventory is empty and my health is full but I can't interact with a potion to put it in my inventory.
and the size doesn't seem to make a difference either, because sometime I instantly drink 150hp potions, and sometimes I store them.

There is a reason for this but I can't remember what it is. I haven't played the game in years but I seem to remember this only happening if you were heavily wounded or it was the way you pressed the button differently to pick up and store instead of pick up and use.

50 and 150 hp potion are for instant use, you can carry only 4x500, 2x1000, and 1xfull hp potions.

that's weird cus I was sure I picked up and carried a 150hp one
