Clanfolk

Am I the only one?
Every screencap I see, people build big complexes. Even Blorf himself seems to do it! For me, especially in a setting like Clanfolk, it's individual structures or bust. Am I the only one who sacrifices optimal resource consumption for realism, or is anyone else equally insistent about their roleplaying?

For me it's about keeping them out of the cold during the winter time as much as possible...

I've built a mainhouse worksheds cookhouse large outhouse and started work on a bunkhouse for workers/future clanfolk though to be fair I've been thinking about tearing down the old mainhouse making it smaller and only for one "family" that is parents and children and building more so I can spread the folk around the map so that ♥♥♥♥ can theoretically be more easier done in other parts of the map.

I agree. I was doing the same. Individual buildings. Was trying to make a small village. I understand a megabase complex in something like Rimworld, but not in the Clanfolk setting.

Do keep in mind that your clan is a single (possibly extended) family. If you start with the default clan, you have two grandparents, two adults, and three young kids. Realistically, they would all be living in the same house. And it was not common to have separate buildings for, say, cooking and sleeping. In fact, the most common types of peasant houses in early medieval Scotland usually didn't even have separate barns; animals lived in one end of the same long building.

True, but I find a bit of a balance is in order. In my case, that means the "initial clan" - the patriarch and his wife, and their daughter - live in one house, but their son, his wife, and their son live in another.

That's quite interesting about the barns though! I may have to look into that.

This is only 3 rooms. Its no complex. I won't let it grow into a Rimworld complex, though that would be very easy to do. They will eventually get individual rooms like a noble family, but they were only lost orphans when I started. Manpower was limited that first year.
edit: I forgot we made a private bedroom for the hired worker. :ccmine: Its 4 rooms now.

If you wish to see how this clanhold grew from my orphan start, you can see the screenshots in the following thread.

I love roleplaying in my games, shh, don't tell anyone. :DMderp:

Do you have screenshots of your village you want to share?

I quite like this! A solid balance between the classic strategy and medieval norms.

Well, since you're curious...

At present, I've got two homes (one for the elders and their daughter, another for their son, his wife, and their son), each with a small room for heating that will slowly be expanded into a proper kitchen.

Left of these is the storehouse, and left of that is where all the threshing is done. There's a little henhouse sort of deal further down, the efficacy of which I'm not yet confident in.

Currently, we're using mined out mountainside for our iron production, but my future goals:

  • Put a roof over that structure in the center and turn it into a dedicated granary of sorts.
  • Make a proper smithy.
  • Put a roof over the lumber area, though I'll probably leave it unwalled or at least open on two sides.

I intend to start on these next spring.

There are plenty of villages shared on the discord

Maybe it's time I join the Discord...

I got tired of Discords. Don't get me wrong, i like fun communities, what I didn't like were the RATs (remote access trojans).

So there's no point for me in trying to look at someones sceenshots via Discord.

Have fun.

Oof, good point. Knew there was a reason I avoided public chat services. With the good always comes the bad.

Simple Build plan - Scottish Peat Moss House:
Why can't there be a simple house building options with beds and cook stove layout, just like a simple "Scottish peat moss house". This way all you have to do is click and the workers then build it from the foundation up, when materials become available. Make it big enough for the starting five people, most start with.

You could do the same with a Forge, Shed, etc. Still leave the option to build how you want, but have some basic plans too.
Valdemort Jul 27, 2022 @ 10:11am
I started with separate buildings with interconnected roofs, so that during winter even when they were outside they still had covered walkways to help with movement speed. The new fancy complex I'm working on is more connected, but will still likely have some separate pieces.
