Enchanting: what's the point?
I'm playing with the latest version of Libertatis patch, just to clarify

I got my Casting up to 80 but certain enchantments that should work, don't. Garlic is bugged or something, I see no DEX boosts from enchanting with it. When I put bone dust on a regular longsword and enchant it, the STR boost is there but unlisted. Amikar rocks seem to work like they're supposed to at least, since durability is no longer shown. What's more I see other guides talk about enchanting things like the bejeweled sword with a golem heart for paralysis, but when I try it my guy just says "it's impossible." Are they all lying?

So what's up with this ability? Is there something I'm missing? I thought enchanting sounded cool and being a spellsword is my favorite kind of class, but I can't really improve anything other than the most basic weapons. What's the point?

Hello!

First thanks for have specified what version are you playing on, and is good to hear that is Libertatis!
So, your Casting level is enough to enchant everything so, the problem doesn't lie here.
Let's proceed in order:
Garlic. Garlic should give Deterity boost, but, as far as I know, not to everything. To explain, you can echant almost everything with this item, but weapon will have the +DEX, but armours not,
Bone Normal and Dragon: The enchantment should work fine.
The enchantments are not write in the description of the weapon, BUT you can see them if the numeral icon in the book is blue, if is blue a boost is working.
Green is Dexterity, Red is Strenght, White is Amikar rock
Amikar rock: it totally work fine with everything, as you says, you can know when it's work by stop seeing the Durability on the description.
Golem Hearth. For some reason this particular enchantment doesn't work on some weapons like Giant Slayer, Bejevel weapons, Ciprian sword, Assassin dagger and other pre-enchanted swords, but it totally works fine on more "regualar" weapons.
Remember one timportant thing, you can do only one enchantment on the weapon / armour.

You can find some more infos on our guide:

Giant Slayer, Bejevel weapons, Ciprian sword, Assassin dagger and other pre-enchanted swords

Its already enchanted weapons, you cannot enchant it twice.
That lines up with what I suspected: enchanting is only useful for boosting the basic weapons like an axe or saber. Also, I kinda understand not being able to put STR and DEX bonuses on armor; that's up to four pieces including a shield, you could get pretty crazy with that. It just bothers me a little because it means that for such a high level spell, Enchant Weapon doesn't really do much compared to anything else I can cast at that level, or even lower level spells

It was originally meant for the story purpose, you enchant the meteor sword and then go kill Akbaa! That you can enchant some other things is an added bonus, not the main feature of the game. That's why it sucks overall, you're supposed to use it once in the story at the end and that's it. That's also the reason, why Enchant Weapon is such a high level skill. It's meant for the end only. Mods do stuff like this to make it more useful and that's fine, but the main purpose always was for the end game use.
