Obviously you will have a much more immersive experience with a Wheel/pedals.
If you enjoy the game with a game pad, you could always keep an eye out for a used wheel and pedals on facebook marketplace or whatever classifieds you have in your country.
But it is playable with a gamepad thou you should turn on more than a few assists for gamepads, like traction control at least.
Do you have the pedals of your setup plugged in your computer directly or it's plugged in the wheel? Because if the pedals are plugged in your computer directly, theres your problem, I know it's dumb but I've seen multiple reports that having two "input device" plugged in at the same time cause problem with the game.
Also, to awnswer OP. I recently bought a thrustmaster t150 in great condition for 125$ usd off a craiglist-like website specificly to play f1 22 in VR, and it is SOOO much better than a gamepad for me, i love it. Just wish the game was more stable :\
Probably no big deal but if you find yourself getting disoriented controller versus in VR car movement might be the cause.
It's as if without the wheels and pedals there to help convince my brain I'm in an actual car I get motion sickness.
Maybe this is unique to myself though.
